I quite agree with you. I couldn't be arsed to get CoD2, to say nothing of all the various other franchises. But CoH quite impressed me despite its horrifically cliche title. It earned its 96% from PCGamer US.Vympel wrote:I for one am sick to death of WW2 games. The genre is getting fucking stale. Let it die for a few years.

I'm hoping the expansion includes the Russkis(assuming there is one)
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

Broken how? I mean, sure, they're good, but a good infantry rush and they die kinda fast. It's not like they're much good at hitting a moving target, though they are damn useful for taking down AT guns.
Do not meddle in the affairs of insomniacs, for they are cranky and can do things to you while you sleep.

They're vulnerable, yeah. But they take down entrenched infantry positions with impunity. AT guns, MG nests, Snipers, Occupied buildings... everything normal infantry can't kill except tanks, are done in by mortars.Hotfoot wrote:Broken how? These are good things, but there's a downside to them as well. The lethality of these weapons means that if some of your men are attacked when you're looking at something else, they can end up losing a perfectly winnable fight before you even notice they're in it.Nephtys wrote:The game actually seems sorta cool. I'm shocked though. An RTS where you need cover to survive?! Crazy. Wait, a machine gun actually kills people it hits?! WOAH! Looting enemy guns with your soldiers? Crazy.

Sometimes the mortar lands in a good spot for you, sometimes it lands in a good spot for your enemy. You never know what is going to happen, or when you'll explode into a little bits of gore.GuppyShark wrote:These are good things, but there's a downside to them as well. As an aside, I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but I noticed a lot of people on the relic forums under the wrong assumption so I'd just like to clear one thing up - Tanks run over infantry. It can happen; infantry are usually smart enough to get out of the way, but sometimes things just don't pan out (or do they? )

I'm more referring to situations where your guys are staring down a tank and you've got enormous amounts of Munitions but unless you're able to get over to that battle instantly and have them throw the sticky bomb that disables the tank's weapon, you can lose the squad in seconds.
I like the way you can micro the troops in CoH, but I'd like to spend more time doing it and less time worrying about my resources.

Wow indeed. Apparently nobody ever played Soldiers: Heroes of WW2.Nephtys wrote:The game actually seems sorta cool. Mortar squads are so broken though. :P

And to clarify, I'm going to get Faces of War before I even think about getting CoH.

Really? I played the demo and it was mediocre at best...weemadando wrote:Wow indeed. Apparently nobody ever played Soldiers: Heroes of WW2.Nephtys wrote:The game actually seems sorta cool. Mortar squads are so broken though.

I tested this on a friend of mine. He was sort of noobish still, so out of bizarre desperation when I was losing a skirmish, I activated my Sherman's mine flail. It of course starts spinning up and I charge the tank into his. Lo and behold... he actually ran away from it! Intrigued, I began to devote all of my remaining resources toward Shermans and mine flail upgrades until I had amassed a horde of them. Satisfied with their number (though still making more) I charged them into his base with the sole purpose of microing them to run over infantry. At first I was disappointmented when the infantry ran away, but then I saw one explode into a fine red mist - now laughing maniacally, I proceeded to run down as many infantry as possible with the activated crab mine flails, scoring 11 splatters by the time the round ended.InnocentBystander wrote:As an aside, I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but I noticed a lot of people on the relic forums under the wrong assumption so I'd just like to clear one thing up - Tanks run over infantry. It wasn't fantastic, but it was damn good with some REALLY strong mods.InnocentBystander wrote:Really? I played the demo and it was mediocre at best...weemadando wrote:Wow indeed. But I digress, I was referring to the people who seem to think that a realistic RTS with inventory management/capturing weapons is somehow new...
I mean I can go outside of the WW2 genre and say: Soldiers of Anarchy.
I know that there are others, but damned if I can think of the names right now...

Oh, well if its more Soldiers, then I'm definately game.
I'm very much torn though. I want fully destructible terrain. And I REALLY don't want base building.
But, the direct control mechanism, I still love. We used to play a lot of co-op of Soldiers at LANs with small numbers of direct controlled units taking on massive enemy offensives... Good times... Good times...

Faces of War just won me over...
Looking at the website (excuse the engrish), and more specifically at the MP modes:

Too bad there isn't just a plain old "hunt" mode. Though we did improv it a lot in Soldiers... Playing adversarial and seeing who could get the better "kills" of various harmless farm critters. 88mm HE round vs Cow = hilarity. 20mm flak directing firing at a swarm of chickens = KFC for all.Faces of War wrote:CHICKEN HUNT
Team mode. On the map there is a strategical wood where there are many wonderful fat chickens. To cook lunch you have to get as many chickens as you can and bring them to the field-kitchen. You get points for each chicken. The player who gets more chickens in a round will be full and happy. Infantry only.
Sure. I am rather sick of getting stuck with random morons when my friends are not around. Last round I lost my forward base because my teammate put wire across MY bridge, blocking an MG team from the fight. We ended up winning at least. Neither Allied player was particularly strong and thought they could win by bunkering on their side of the river with infantry and howitzers. After I got my ally to listen, we both built huge, triple-veteran tank forces, repaired the bridges and blitzed. Their defenses broke like eggshells.Lonestar wrote:Think we should set up a game coordination thread?
Some clan gave me admin rights to their TeamSpeak server two days after randomly joining it, so we can have voice chat. Problem is that CoH does not let you add anyone to your friends list if you cannot see them. I tend to hang out in Cherbourg.
