AOL issue (now a PC-Cillin issue)
Yeah yeah, the first person who says "don't use AOL" or something to that effect is getting cockslapped by me. Anyway I have an annoying bug that occurs when I first load up AOL on my computer. When I attempt to connect to the Internet, the connection window stalls on the final phase and does nothing. However, if I Ctrl-Alt-Del and have AOL restart, it connects without a problem.
Any ideas?

Re: AOL issue
The only advice I could give you is uninstall, then reinstall your AOL software. Did you try that yet?Dalton wrote:Yeah yeah, the first person who says "don't use AOL" or something to that effect is getting cockslapped by me. No, because it is a gigantic pain in the ass and likely to happen again. That will be my last resort.Darksider wrote:The only advice I could give you is uninstall, then reinstall your AOL software. Sorry I can't be much of a help either here or with your email issues, but:
Are you running the latest version of the AOL software? Any patches, updates, security advisories, etc that you might have missed?
THe old favourite - have you made sure your system is clean of malware? Cleaned out temporary files? Wiggled network cables/cards?

Dalton, is it possible to use another piece of connection/driver software other than the one supplied by the AOL?
I don't know how your AOL connection exactly works, but if its a DSL/ADSL modem hooked up to you computer, then you could try other means of controlling it.
When I had my ADSL connected to my comp, I too had to use some crappy software by my provider until I found this:

Actually I don't use AOL for internet connection. I have always-on broadband and I can access the internet normally without loading AOL.Tolya wrote:Dalton, is it possible to use another piece of connection/driver software other than the one supplied by the AOL?

If that's the case, then why are you still using AOL? Just strictly out of curiosity of course.Dalton wrote:Actually I don't use AOL for internet connection. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Does AOL support POP3? I haven't used it AOL mail in so long that I don't know if it does or not. But if it does, maybe you could set up some type of outlook account just for getting the email and avoid having to deal with AOL's software altogether?Dalton wrote:Because my fiancee uses it for email, and we don't pay for it.General Zod wrote:If that's the case, then why are you still using AOL? I don't think you guys understand me. I don't want a workaround. I want to fix the problem. She likes using AOL, so therefore, I will fix it so that she can use it.

Never mind, I fixed the issue by routing the AOL port through my firewall.
Adam: What happens is that I force-quit it so that AOL thinks there was an error and restarts itself.

Nope, that workaround didn't fucking work. Not even turning off the firewall fucking worked. What the fucking shit is wrong with this goddamn piece of crap program?

Which AOL software are you using?
I'm using the AOL 9.0 Security Edition with AOL Privacy Wall as my firewall. I'm running on DSL through QWest and I think the only times I've had trouble connecting I either had to restart the DSL Modem (once) and I think I've had to restart the computer after it had been on for a few days. Everything else was fine but the AOL program was getting kind of finicky at that point. I've found that loging off of Windows and then back on will usually do the trick without having to completely restart everything.
I still use AOL software mainly because I like the mail format, address book and a few other functions but browser wise it kind of sucks.
I tried that new AOL Open Ride and while some of the browser features are nice in general I didn't like the program. It kind of dumped several of the things I liked about AOL. In fact I would have stuck with AOL Navigator (which is supposedly been replaced by Open Ride) before going with Open Ride, but then AOL Navigator isn't a whole lot different than MSN Premium except it's AOL and has a bit of Netscape/Firefox mixed into it.

Yeah I got 9.0 Limited Edition. What's limited about it I'm not sure.

I don't know if I've heard of that one. Maybe it's the most up to date version of 9.0. Unless they came out with a version of the 9.0 software for people to use for the free version of AOL. I don't know why they would need to do that though.
Supposedly the most up to date AOL software is that Open Ride thing but right now it's only out in beta form.

I've done some testing and I think the problem is with this Trend-Micro PC-Cillin program that came with my PC. Apparently it's designed to work alongside AOL 9.0 Security Edition, but I have the Limited Edition.
I think I can solve this problem if I download the correct program, but I have so far been unable to find AOL 9.0SE, even on oldversion.com. Does anyone know where I can get it?

The reviews are not appealing at all including the one that says giant ads will be shoved on your screen when you check your e-mail which is what Dalton needs, heheh.Dominus Atheos wrote:I think this is it.
