I had just come off playing Frontier: First Encounters and was looking for another similar type of space-sim. One that in the end wouldn't be so damn repetitive.
BC3000AD promised all that and more, I gave it a go.. and was horrified by the incomplete mess I experienced.
Still, after hearing Smart's explanations I gave him the benefit of the doubt. But hey-ho it's a decade later and he's still pushing out incomplete, bugged up the wazoo games and making stupid excuses while telling everybody else just why he's so much cleverer than them. He fully deserves all the ire against him.
More abombinations from Derek Smartass on the way.

Smart's games aren't buggy because they rushed him. He took seven goddamn years to squeeze that piece of crap out, and the publisher probably was starting to wonder if it was turning into Battlecruiser Forever or something.
And he did it again and again. He's got such a hardon for his 'IP' garbage (intellectual property? Call it your goddamn idea) that, of course, has absolutely zero fleshing out... he's all wanked out about his fanfic universe but there's no fanfic or story! Ugh!
Anyway, no, his games are small-minded pieces of shit that can't seem to get their own premise down. It's a bad space sim combined with a bad shooter, bad vehicle driver and bad fighter game. If the game he gave us did one of those properly and not attempt to do all four of them in the most horrifically bad fashion ever, that'd be great.
I'm all for ambition and variety, but he is not making a game! He's making a sandbox. You can't win his game and there's no way to play it. You just muck around until you get bored, and it's so buggy, ugly, and labyrinthine in it's control that it puts the Wild Wacky Action Bike to shame in terms of sheer stupidity of design.
He deserves more criticism than he's gotten. He deserves no rest from his sins and hubris! He could have just made a damn battleship simulator in space and people woulda' loved that. But no. He decided he needed to be Mr. Fancyman and shoehorn in crap nobody gave a rat's ass about just to show off his manhood. I hate it when people do that! Stop saddling me with your 'vision' and just give me a game already.

You really have to wonder about a guy who made a jack-of-trades game that went down like a lead balloon and then for reasons known only to himself goes and makes Universal Combat, a game with even more genres stuck together. Obviously he thought BC3000AD wasn't stretched out enough!

That's pretty much the problem. I couldn't figure out jack shit in the game either, and it's got no "soul". The game is just ... barren. Yes, you do need a story and direction somewhere in the game. Covenant's criticisms of the entire series are spot on, of course. I still don't think the original BC3000AD debacle was his fault, but he's been making the same game ever since and quite frankly, it still sucks balls, even without the horrific bugs of the original (which was by all accounts unplayable).Enigma wrote: When I first heard of the game and (subsequently either got a free copy or dwnloaded for free (not pirated)) I thought the premise of the game was a good one until I played it.True you can play in one of several different careers, but there was no main story or side quests that I knew of. I quickly got bored of it and uninstalled the game. Plus the game was hard as hell to figure out.

And lets not forget his decision to reinvent the wheel UI/HUD-wise, so even if you were flightsim nut his HUD, controls and everpresent abbreviations made the game staggeringly opaque. None of the existing standard terminology of flight was good enough for his IP, so he made up entirely new nomenclature, terminology and abbreviations for EVERYTHING.
So he can later have a brag&wankfest. "Look! I reinvented the way space sims are made! Im a genius!"And lets not forget his decision to reinvent the wheel UI/HUD-wise, so even if you were flightsim nut his HUD, controls and everpresent abbreviations made the game staggeringly opaque. I mean, just looking at the guy, you do realize there is something wrong with him.
His ideas are quite nice, but I can also say that about mine. When BC3000AD was released I was absolutely extatic and I bought a retail copy. I've dreamt of seeing a universal space sim that lets you be a real starship captain...going to a planet covertly, dispatching a small commando unit to do "the job", provide the unit with support and insertion/extraction when needed...I mean, all the stuff you see in the movies and read in the books and hope that one day you too will be able to do.
Instead, I got a piece of software so utterly crappy, buggy and unplayable in terms of interface that I was stunned.
And still, after so many years, he is still hitting the wall with his head, releasing crappy "games"...
I mean, there are people out there, who make and release better FREEWARE without making all the noise around themselves. Like Orbiter. I mean, shit, if Smart had like 10% of Dr. Martin Schweiger abiliities, he could have a chance of actually doing something useful.
Instead, he is a worthless piece of attention whoring shit.
