Oblivion questions

Post by Shinova »

I'm finally going to get Oblivion soon, after being without a graphics card capable of playing (I'm getting that too pretty soon as well).

What I want to know right now before actually playing it is whether it's better to start playing Oblivion almost right out of the box, or after installing some mods in first?

I'm planning on putting in the cool stuff like wizard's tower, and that one mod I read about that gets rid of invisible barriers, but I've read about Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. Should I install that one before playing Oblivion for the first time?

Anything else I should do or don't do before playing?

You can always install the mods upon play if you decide they're necessary- the only thing I recommend you do straight out of the box is download (most of) the top 10 "must have" Oblivion mods.

Whether you want Oblivion's original nonsensical levelled enemy system modded out or not is a matter of personal choice, really. I finished the game without modding it, myself ...

Don't listen to Vympel, he's anti-modding. ;)

It's worth playing the game without mods, just to understand how fully the game was broken by poor decisions and the console port. You could always finish the game at level one, then put mods on and play properly. :)

Damn, that list is old.

I have to parrot Stark. Play the game unmodded first, that way you can decide which mods you want. Currently, there's several major rebalance mods: Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, Franseco's Level Creatures, Martigan's Monster Mod, WarCry and OOOFransMMM (which combines the first three into one). All of them change how the game is played, with OOO doing the most. And then there's a metric shit load of minor mods that do small parts of each. You can find information on all three at the official forums.

The only mods I can recommend you install right away are the texture mods, which you can get from The Oblivion Texture Overhaul. For a next-gen game, Bethseda did crappy texture work, and this fixes that. There's also a new texture overhaul on the horizon - Qarl's Texture Pack 3, which should make some major quality and performance improvements on his and others' current world textures.

There are two mods that you should get. One is BTMod which just fixes the UI. The second is the Unofficial Oblivion Patch which fixes a lot of bugs.

I would also highly reccomend the AF Leveling mod. It takes all the frustration out of managing skill increases.

I'm also thinking of buying this game. Just how much disruption should I expect this game to cause to my life? I've heard its pretty damn addictive.

Once you get started it's highl addicitive, but if you step off for a few days it might be hard to pick it back up

If I use a balance mod like Oscuro's or Francesco's, then would it also mean that I don't have to do that thing where you make skills you barely use into major skills and almost never level up?

Yes. Especially with Oscuro's, because his main quest end-game enemies WILL rip you three new assholes if you're not at a high level.

Also, if you don't like standard player character leveling system, then Kubo's Character Advancement System is highly recommended, and it works with Oscuro's, Fran's and pretty much every other rebalance mod. It's also very configurable.

Is there a mod to give shops non-scaled inventory which you could possibly break in and steal at 3am?
