Heroes V

Post by NomAnor15 »

Has anyone here played/does anyone own Heroes Of Might And Magic V? If so, how does it compare to III? I'm asking because I'm considering buying it, but I was pretty disappointed in IV compared to III.

Huh. That's less than 10 condoms per person. Though, assuming an even split between gender, that's almost 20 condoms per penis, so I certainly hope that would suffice for the three weeks they're there. -Alferd Packer

I a nutshell.

Do not, it sucks in any way shape and form compared to Heroes III

Actually, that is a matter of opinion. I happen to like HoMM V, but the expansion is not worth getting before they bother to patch it.

The game needs the latest patch to work well, but it is remarkably similar to Heroes III in the way it plays, but hero development is much more dynamic and different because you have so many different directions to go to.

You can also pick it up as the Silver Edition (containing both Heroes V and the Hammers of Fate expansion) for a not too extortionate price. In some ways I like Heroes V more than Heroes III, but in other ways III is better.

Both kick the crap out of Heroes IV, which was playable and even enjoyable if you had the Complete version patched up to the max.

For me, Heroes V was definitely worth buying (I got the EU Collector's Edition), as I happen to love turn based fantasy strategy.

I've always loved III, and I've idly toyed with getting 5. However, the two friends of mine who got it for the PC both complained of performance issues, so I'm a bit gunshy, even if I am on Mac OS X.

Ah well. I still have III Complete - if I get V and it ends up sucking, I can always go back.

From what I've read and see though, V has the potential to be a very interesting new direction.

From what I've heard, V seems much more RPG-like. III is one of my favorite games ever, but I like it as a strategy game. I've always despised RPGs, so how much is that element emphasized, do you know?

The problem with all Heroes games has been that they have generally not been any good without extensive patching. III was playable after a few patches that made the legion bug a lot rarer, IV was a rather good game as long as you had both expansions and patch 3.0 and V has been good after patch 1.4. Before 1.2 it was essentially useless due to all the bugs.

Well that might be my problem, but it is still a sad state when you have to wait for a patch to play your game.

It is a rather sad state of things, but I do suggest you give it another go with the latest patch. You can download that from the Celestial Heavens website (it's the place to go to for all Heroes V related info). You can also download the Skillwheel, which shows you what skills you need to take in order to get the combo skills, and is very useful. DL the executive, it's the most useful by far.

There is a bit more, but not much. There's more of a selection of skills per level up, and heroes can be more interesting now - however, the battle grid being smaller and 3D makes for faster and more vicious battles.

I didn't see too much, but I was rather impressed by what I saw. Most reviews I've read compare the game's feel to III, which makes me hopeful.

I consider III and V the best of the series. Obviously, V is a lot prettier (city view is really impressive now)
