Sword of the Stars: nBSG Mod?

Post by Covenant »

Sadly, I didn't make it. But it seems that the Kerebos team is coming at it from an opposite direction to me, making new models while keeping their kinda junky effects, while I make superior effects. When united, it really would be a nBSG mod, and you gotta wonder... what is Kerebos doing modelling and spacing these things if they don't intend to use 'em somehow?

They posted these on the mod forum. They have a fairly antagonistic relationship with us modders, so I wonder if it's just done to snub us or somethin'. They've been deliberately mean like that in the past.

My guess is it's a proof-of-concept for a new game or something, an attempt to get the go-ahead to make a nBSG inspired game from whatever group would be able to lisence them to do that. They've got the Cylons in there too, but of course, so far it looks pretty bland without the effects, and without higher Rez textures I'm not sure how seriously I can take it. They obviously spent some time on making this (you can see in this close-up not only the scale of fighters-to-Galactica, but you can see that the model is a little sloppy), but I wonder where it's going. It's possible that this is just done internally by their own staff to make the game more fun for them--or as a demo to highlight their new fighter system (if they are making that claim it'd be a full reverse of their earlier position).

Still... interesting. These models, combined with my mod, would make it complete. If only! All in all, very nice looking, high quality for a Space Sim type of game.

Your mod really blew them out of the water, and is a more accurate way to describe BSG combat anyway. Missile swarms as support weapons, heavy flak screens and spaceship combat decided by maneuver and volume of fire on target.

I'd be really nice if they made those pretty models go into something cool though.

Frankly, they SHOULD be ashamed that Cov was able to make such massively superior effects. I know the Kerberos guys have a reputation for being wankers, but the poor grace they accept mod developments is just SAD.

Honestly, it was rather pathetic they got so defensive. You know what? It's a GOOD thing that modders care enough to go and do some shit like that. The fact that my dear Covvie could do it isn't the issue at all.

The cannons look and work great, and took only a few days to work out and balance. A couple of weeks at most. And this game was being made for what... 18 months?!

More than, technically, since they decided sometime before production that they wanted them like that. Which is, obviously, the real shame. I may be full of shit about most of the debates on SDN, but having used the same tools as they do in order to make these effects and balance the gameplay, there's really no excuse for it to have ended up like it did if they had any real vetting procedure at all for their effects. Maybe making balls of iron for use in kinetic sluglaunchers made sense to them, but if nothing else, they needed to make them visible. And the shit-fueled missiles leaving their brown streaks across the universe are just odd. Not only do the trails not behave similar to a real missile trail, but they are barely visible and ugly. So strange!

Still, we could completely blow them out of the water if a few of us 3D capable folks got together to mishmash some models up. I'm pretty impressed by the modelling done on that Galactica given their otherwise poor quality, but with mods like Warlords out there, I do expect that kind of professionalism from professionals.

Regardless, I appreciate the support about my mod, and I'm always melty to get praise from my dear Nephy (Nephie?), and glad to hear that my mod is not one of the things Stark hates.

BTW, I'm always looking for feedback. I've begun hosting my mod on FilePlanet in the SOTS section so that even if Kerebos bans me from the board, I've got it up there and available. It should be stable for their new patchversion. Sadly, we've they put in a ton of bugs with that patch, but I think we caught most of them and cleaned them up. Ah well. :P

Speaking of Warlords, if anyone has good ISD textures and such, with my ROTS-inspired effects we could make an Imperial faction pretty easily.

What is your mod named. I think I can hunt it down on their site but a name would be helpful.

It'll be called, simply, Covenant's Mod. Clever eh? It's the only mod in their SOTS section, so just poke into fileplanet.

Okay, this might be called a Necro, but it's actually the exact same topic. Kerebos posted some shots of the battles their nBSG mod has... and I gotta say, I am laughing my ass off. Or would be, if it was funny.

Come ON here. My mod does a way better job of simulating Galactica's combat than this does, and I'm just some random dude who spent like an hour making flak from scratch. This is pathetic.

I only post it because it annoys me. Ah well. You gotta wonder how their effects guy got his job when I clearly do it better. I sure know that pisses me off.

Anyway, here we go. Compare this to the fan-made Homeworld mod.
