DNF is at its heart a basic shooter. If they try to make it too complex, it's essentially not a Duke game any more. However, there is no denying that the FPS genre has moved on, whether its theme (WWII games were popular for a while), or in terms of atmosphere, Fear for example. DNF, however wonderful it is graphically is still essentially going to be an outdated game.

Either that, or I'm a cynical SOB.
I expect it to change the way I live my life. Or at the very least, make for good multiplayer action that isn't swamped with CS:S kiddies.

A free blowjob seems unworthy of the decade wait now.

In other vapourware news, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. just achieved beta status and began shipping out builds to reviewers.

Yes, but unlike Duke, STALKER had alot of press coverage and it was pretty well known it wasn't vapourware.

Some people I know expressed doubts about it after a couple setbacks. But luckily they were too pessimistic.

It's got a confirmed release date now, March 30. I'm pondering ordering from a UK website, since they have an awesome special edition that apparently isn't getting a US release. See?

For both Uranium and DW - have you tried Serious Sam and its sequel?

Personally, I feel the original is still superior, however both are good examples of fun, run-and-gun gameplay without complex gritty pretentious stuff. Just you, some staple FPS gun or a comic gun, and loads (loads=>20) of silly enemies for you to mow down before they kill you by taking 2% of hp each. Its a throwback to earlier times - but it works. I especially recommend SS teamplay mode for LAN parties (or you can even go splitscreen!).

I couldn't agree more. Serious Sam is pretty much the only PC shooter I played after Duke 3D: it may be dumb and loud, but at least it's fun and it doesn't take itself seriously at all. Come on - the "plot" is basically "dude runs through historical periods blowing up colourful shit" :)

Interplay released Redneck Rampage, but I don't know if they programmed it, saying that, at the time, RR was fun.

Aye, I remember Shadow Warrior, and the furore over having Shurikens in it, that were finally changed to darts. :)

If this game is still in development hell for nearly a decade since the late 1990s, why didn't they just pull the plug? And I thought Rareware were slow.

Christ, don't mention that to a certain fanboy on SB....you know who I'm talking about. :)

The longest I've ever waited for a game myself is Freelancer and that was five years, and that was stretching it a bit. I really don't see how they can make a profit on this now, even if they are a small team.

The real Rareware could still get a game from concept to gold in three years or under, usually. The only real exception was Conker, but that one went through a full redesign.

I own the first SS game but I never finished it. I got fed up with the enemies constantly teleporting in behind me.

I realise Rareware were not uberslow like 3D Realms are with Duke Nukem For(n)ever (like nearly TEN YEARS instead of only two to three years). But Rareware seemed to have been unstuck ever since they've been bought out by Microsoft quite some time ago and I heard they were losing talent after GoldenEye's release and during Perfect Dark's development (but their X-Box 360 games seem to have been relatively well received by critics and gamers).

Rare had come unstuck long before that. Basically after Conker's Bad Fur Day it took them until the Xbox 360 to make another decent game.

Why do you think Nintendo were willing to let them go? Because they'd fucked about so long with Dinosaur Planet and then when it eventually did come out, hiding behind the Starfox license, it was tedious. (and dragged Starfox into the gutter, from where it's taken that series until Starfox Command to crawl back out)

Tried it. Meh. Didn't 'feel' great. I'd ideally like something tight and sharp, like the HL2 engine/sound effects, albeit with different guns (not a fan of the HL2 SMG). Also with faster running... I like zipping about in Doom.

Oh man, I miss that magazine so much. Only ran for a few years, but it was loads of fun to read. Really, the only PC magazine that could hold my interest, as it was completely tongue-in-cheek, yet still gave good info.

'Course, ever since its brief reign, pretty much every other mag took a lot of cues from it, but nothing has matched it for sheer awesomeness so far.
