Well, Sun has apparently opened sourced Java, which should be nice for Linux distros, but I don't think will have much effect otherwise. JavaFX seems interesting, but given Java is associated w/ "slow", and that it doesn't have development tools as nice as Flash's, I'm not optimistic on the uptake (although I'll give it slightly better chances than Silverlight due to cross platform and install base of JRE(or maybe that's just the fanboy in me)). Trimmed down runtime should be very helpful. Comments, thoughts?

EDIT:
Demo of the motorola website is rather unimpressive- animation was slow and jerky on a PIV-1.3GHz compared to flash, uses up 1/8th of RAM, 5 meg download (then again, part of that 5 megs is probably the JavaFX libraries, but this doesn't address performance)....

Also, as an aside, does anybody here still use the 1.4.2 plugin? Is it really worth supporting (I'm writing a java applet (see other thread)- I can get people to upgrade, but it would minimize annoyance) ?
