What in hell? C: Files duplicated

Post by Superman »

Anyone know why the files on my hard drive would be duplicated? Other than a system restore, how should I fix this?

Thanks!

You could be referring to any number of things. Give examples or better, a screen shot, perhaps?

It could be anything from a second windows installation to a corrupted Explorer showing every file twice, from your description.

Good idea! Screenshots ahoy.

I had nowhere near this many files in my C drive before this happened.

WHAT THE HELL

Those are not files, they are DEVICE NAMES! I repeat, what the hell! Corrupted explorer?

My reaction as well - What the flying fuck is that? It looks like some unholy merger between device manager and explorer.

Possibly an indication of a viral infection...

No virus... I think I know what happened. I used a driver scanning and update program and it fucked shit up... to say the least.

What to do from here... Well, I guess I'll nuke this laptop and reinstall, but I'm debating on whether to put vista back on or just use XP.

Oh wonderful. I ran this program on my main PC and just noticed that it did the exact same thing. I might be able to use system restore on that one...

Upload whatever program it is to http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and once you know what it's infecting you with maybe you can fix it.

It's not a virus. I dunno what exactly is going on, but I scanned it with that and another program.

AH HA! Mystery solved!

Okay, so when I installed this stupid program, it asked where it should put the saved drivers for any possible future restorations. I, like a tard, quickly chose the C drive and moved on to install it.

Not a big deal after all... :o

Thanks for the advice.
