They have games for the PS3 now? What will they think of next? :D
I am very glad that I hung onto my PS2. I don't have to worry about my two-foot-high stacks of games being rendered useless.

They might as well drop the price to $299 if they've got the business plan in place to make an overall profit off a loss-leader. It would probably let them finally pass the 360.
Sony was eyeing profitability in 2008 for the PS3. That suggests two things for me:

1. It's not profitable on hardware, just yet.
2. They're not going to make a price cut, just yet--they need to keep the price up to start making money on the thing.

The only interpretation of this that works with a price cut (assuming they're still shooting for profits in 2008) is that the PS3 is VERY profitable, already, and that they can make a price cut without comrpomising their profits. I think this is somewhat unlikely.

IMO it's more likely that with HD-DVD's demise now imminent, Sony will keep the price of the PS3 high for as long as they can and skim money off the early Blu-Ray adopters. Barring the biggest, bestest game in history showing up on the PS3, they're not going to catch up to the 360 or Wii anytime soon, so there's no point in massive, across the board price cuts.

Sorry for the mini necro but since today is the 28th has it happened? The U.S. Bestbuy seems to be selling only the 40GB at $399 but the Canadian Best Buy is still selling both 40 and 80GB.

EDIT: Even Sony's website says they offer both types.

Of course it is going to sell them until they run out of stock.

Also, re: thread topic

You should have come on board for the big win at the beginning. Snap up an 80 while you can, if you can find one.

Arstechnica (VERY reliable, historically) has a source who claims that the 80 GB model is being replaced with a 120 or 160 GB model with a dual shock 3 controller bundled (instead of the current Sixaxis), at the same price.
