How does my pc know the difference between drives?

Quick question; I just installed an external hard drive to my laptop. It's recognized as removable media. Anyone know if there's any way to make it think that it's the same as whatever the C drive is recognized as?

It might be something to do with the hardware it uses for the IDE-USB conversion, since my external drive is recognized as a regular hard drive. What make/model is it?

You can exert control over the drive letters in Windows by manually assigning drive letters to the CD-ROM or removable drives. You do this as follows:

Right-click My Computer, and choose Properties.
Choose the Device Manager tab.
Click the + next to the CD-ROM drive icon. Right-click the CD-ROM drive, choose Properties, and select the Settings tab.
Select and change the Start Drive Letter.
Select the same letter for End Drive Letter.
Click OK and allow your system to reboot for changes to take effect.
Repeat the previous steps by clicking the + next to Disk Drives and assign a different drive letter to your removable drive.
Using these steps you can interchange the removable drive with the CD-ROM drive, but you cannot set either type to a drive letter below any of your existing floppy or hard drives.

Then again, this link says:

Your computer can use up to 26 drive letters, from A through Z. Use drive letters C through Z for hard disk drives. Drive letters A and B are reserved for floppy disk drives. However, if your computer does not have a floppy disk drive, you can assign these letters to removable drives.

If you want it to be recognized as a hard drive and not removable media, you will need to open the properties of the drive and adjust it from there. Setting it to optimize for performance as opposed to quick removal might do it, but it depends on the way your external mount handles things.
