Scanner help - dark images

Post by Bounty »

This might be a short thread since I'm afraid I already know the answer - I've borrowed a Canoscan Lide 25 and am trying to scan some photos and text. The latter goes fine, the former comes out extremely dark. As in, photos taken in bright daylight look like early-evening indoors shots, and darker images are murky blackness.

I'm using Xsane on Ubuntu to do the scanning. Am I missing something in setup, is the scanner broken, or is this just the inevitable end result of borrowing a budget scanner?

When you scan, do you see the glow from the light leaking out?

Not noticeably.

ETA: I don't see any light leaking out. There's a moving shadow, but that could just be the scanner moving up and down against the room's ambient light.
