Sick of IL-2's shitty Dynamic Generator

Post by CaptHawkeye »

Look, i've been playing IL-2 since the day it was released long ago in 2001. From the release of one add-on to another the devs have done a great job adding to the game and ultimately turning into the finest sim of the past 10 years. However, while Oleg and his boys have fixed many problems they've left many others unanswered. "No biggy" says I. "Ignorance is bliss after all." I've managed to forget many an issue that continues to plauge IL-2 to this day.

You know, things like cheating AI that doesn't experience black out/red out. Super human AA gunners who can aim like the Master Chief. Wonky damage models which can literally make some of the game's lighter weapons (like everything NOT 20mm cannons or bigger) totally useless. No matter how many a hundred round the enemy absorbs with his bi-plane!

But one thing leaves me in ruin. My "brain off" capabilities are unable to silence it.

IL-2 Sturmovik's Dynamic Campaign Generator Sucks.

I keep trying to tell myself. "Maybe this campaign just got bugged. Maybe the reason i'm just flying my 38th airfield defense mission at New Guinea with P-40s against another force of dive bombing Bettys is because this campaign got befuddled in the game's mind." Unfortunantly, I have tried many other campaign types. The bad news is, the problems is systemic. Good news? Who said their was any?

To put it simply, or allow you to skip this monologue if you haven't already read it, is their a Dgen mod out there that makes the game's engine STOP sucking at everything it does?
Best care anywhere.

HOLY SHIT HAWKS. I just recently started playing Il2 and my biggest hate is how useless anything not a cannon is; fly behind enemy plane DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA with 8 50cals, Plane flies off. Compared to 30mm cannons in say the 263 where its; 1 second burst = B17 wing falls off.

Yeah but with enough ignorance (and hard liquor) you can forget about shit like that. The dynamic campaign generator doesn't blend in with the rest of the game no matter how many times you vigorously plant your skull on a cinder block! (Similar effects can be obtained by using the game's Full Mission Editor.)

Shutting off brain cells works for everything else, but some of them light up and nag me whenever I actually try to play a campaign!
Best care anywhere.

Well, yeah, that's actually realistic.

What I hate about this game is the insane amount of time it takes to reach your objective. I'd put my plane on autopilot, walk away from my desk for five minutes then come back and it has reached about halfway to my destination. That and when the plane is on autopilot it has the retarded tendency to do a loop every 30 seconds. I got sick and tired of this game and uninstalled it. I like flight combat games but this one sucked.

No it isn't, not to the degree in Il-2. It shouldn't take a ten second burst against a barely manoeuvring target to even register damage with 50c when five cannon shells make the biggest planes in the game fall to pieces.

Yes, we all know LOLOLOLOL 50CAL IS WEAKZ LOLOLOLOL but they weren't utterly useless. I hear Spitfires couldn't shoot down a biplane with their whole ammo load? Oh wait. Light bombers, you say? With a few slashing passes, you say? Not in fucking Il-2.

So you'd like for the airfields to be closer to the objective?

It's called time compression.
That and when the plane is on autopilot it has the retarded tendency to do a loop every 30 seconds.
Err, no, the autopilot will do that only when you're escorting a flight of friendly aircraft. If you don't like it, don't fly on autopilot, and escort the flight of bombers how you see fit.

I think Crimson Skies or something might be more your game from the above complaints.

I can't imagine a sim *without* time compression. But IL-2 could have really gone for an event skip feature like CFS. (Funny I should mention a game with an even worse dynamic generator.) Even with 8x time acceleration you're still sitting on your desk twiddling your thumbs until the flight of super time accelerated Zeroes on the verge of relativity ambush you.

I'd like to get there in a reasonable amount of time. I don't want the screen to go back during time compression and stop to see if I am close to my destination or not.

The .50s are incredibly underpowered though in IL-2.

The .50 caliber has what 17,000 joules of energy at the muzzle, and is just big enough to fire Armor Piercing, Inciendary, Tracer rounds; whereas the .303 caliber has a mere 2,554 joules of muzzle energy and just isn't big enough to get combined effects like the .50

If you're flying an early Hurricane or Spitfire with just the eight or twelve .303s in the wing trying to down a Heinkel 111 or Ju 88; the frustration is right -- there's a reason the British moved to 4 x 20mm faster than the US did; they had a lot of experience in the crappiness of .303 in the Battle of Britain.

Same thing for a lot of other fighters which have what, two or three rifle caliber machine guns and a single cannon  When you get to the stock USAF fighters with 4 x .50, 6 x .50 or 8 x .50 in the wings, it's a big improvement. I remember one time I was in a battle with Vympel and I literally sawed his wing off a moment after bitching about how weak the guns were...

Why do you think my primary sim platform is the Third Wire Wings over x series? I can just put my wheels up and at 500 feet AGL hit ALT-N and skip ahead to the next major encounter.......like in European Air War or Aces of the Pacific/Europe.

In fact, this is my WOE install (currently at 17 GB for the planes alone)

When you get to the stock USAF fighters with 4 x .50, 6 x .50 or 8 x .50 in the wings, it's a big improvement. I remember one time I was in a battle with Vympel and I literally sawed his wing off a moment after bitching about how weak the guns were...
Did you ever shoot me down in Il-2? I remember it was quite the exercise of frustration for you

(as I recall, you were flying mostly Luftwaffe fighters and I was of course in a La-7)

Combat ace is soon to move to a voluntary subscription model. They have huge bandwidth problems.

I have Wings over Europe, but have barely had a chance to play it. What little I did play of it though impressed me - flying MiG-23s is fun.

Biplanes were(are) unreasonably sturdy in IL-2. Try to kill different target like a Bf-109.

I never noticed any underpowered guns in Il-2. I could shoot down fighters just fine in a crappy little P-11c, and a Mig-3 with 2x 7.62 and 1x30mm was more than enough to murder bombers.

My biggest problem with the game was how "fickly" the controls were. I never seemed to be able to set up the joystick so that I could move the airplane steadily.

Maybe I just plain sucked, though.

BTW, is WoE as awesome as it sounds? The system requirements aren't murderour, so I may just try it.

And I have to ask...does it have nukes in it? :D

Occasionally for fun I turn on unlimited ammo and set up a quick match

me in the 12x Browning .303 armed spitfire
vs
1 or 2 IL-2.

It's comical, really. About the only way to take them down is to shoot their oil cooler and wait till their engine burns up.. which takes quite a while for an IL-2.

Then I hop into a FW190 with extra cannon and marvel at how quickly it rips the wings right off of the Flying Tank.

BTW 8x.50 is more than plenty against Japanese planes.

Then of course, there's these. Great fun to take a few squadrons of them against as many B-17's as you can put in the air.

I noticed a lot of the bugs you did, but they just didn't seem to bother me as much. However, two things pissed me off: every time I flew the Australian campaign, my base would get attacked about five times, then I'd be given a ground-attack mission that was bugged so that half the planes, including mine, were in the exact same spot on the runway as the P-39s we were escorting, causing us to blow up. I also once set up a convoy-attack mission, during which each AI plane, one by one, decided to roll over and fly into the sea on the way to the target.

I tried playing the Beaufighter campaign in PNG.

Bugged so badly that most of my planes would FLY STRAIGHT INTO THE GODDAMN HILLS AND KILL THEMSELVES, leaving me completely vulnerable to getting jumped by the five hundred fucking Zeroes that were always lurking.
