It's quite possible to compare many things that are very different from one another. You could compare the pain of physical injuries to the experience of reading a good book quite easily. You are actually comparing the enjoyment you receive from the activity, and not the activities themselves. The same can easily be done for different genres of entertainment products.Losonti Tokash wrote:o, he didn't. In fact, as far as I know, Stark hates Madden. The idea was to show the absurdity of comparing two things that are so different from one another.

Dont' be a cocksmack. You can LIKE a sport game more than a shooter or a music game, but their attributes are only directly comaprable insofar as they're common - ie, graphics, music, etc. Cooking Mama is more fun than a faceless sport game, but it's ridiculous to say it's 'better' than something so different (it could be a million times 'better' than Halo but someone looking for a shooter won't care). But hey, thanks for redefining what you're 'comparing' between games when Zoidberg was directly referring to Wii's graphics capability in his post.
Then again, you're the sort of person who thinks a console that can't have eye-gougingly low-res graphics on a simple menu screen isn't underpowered or that this isn't relevant to a discussion of some idiot saying it looks just as capable as GTA4. Sorry, the lack of basic graphic effects is sad and hilarious, and the 480p mode on Wii is like Nintendo's way of showing you in crisp HD the terrible textures and awful hardware. Ironically, I think many games look better on component, because the 'blur effect' helps it look less horribly stepped and low-res.

I've seen the Wii on a native 480p set (yep, such things actually exist), and believe it or not the graphics looked very nice, even better than what I got from plugging it into my 1080i screen. The problem with the Wii is that while it can actually do FSAA quite well, its native resolution is only 480p, so the jaggies quickly re-appear when you upscale it to HDTV resolutions. It's better than not having any AA at all, but you're pretty much stuck hoping your TV has a good upscaler if it's an HDTV (and god help you if it's any bigger than about 40 inches).
I'd dispute 'quite well' since it appears that no games support it (many were supposed to like Red Steel, and don't), and (subjectively at least) Wind Waker actually looks worse on a Wii. In the resolution it puts out, with the simple models it uses, it's a powerful reflection of how poor the hardware is. Hopefully the original success of the platform will lead the follow-on console to still be 'low end' and 'cheap' without cutting so many huge corners and ending up looking like shit.DaveJB wrote:I've seen the Wii on a native 480p set (yep, such things actually exist), and believe it or not the graphics looked very nice, even better than what I got from plugging it into my 1080i screen. I'd considered that at 480p there isn't much res to work with for AA, but if I set my 360 to 480p (I'm not sure at which point it scales the image, however) it has nowhere near the jaggies. However, focusing on one particular element of the Wii's lame hardware isn't necessary, regardless of it's success or how cool some of the games are, you can almost pick a hardware element and talk about how underpowered it is.
