Network Problem: Error 769

Post by Gil Hamilton »

Hey, I have a computer issue I was wondering if I could float by more knowledgeable people.

Tonight I had a power outage while I was online due to a passing storm that came through. After power came back, I turned my computer back on and tried to connect to the internet.

However, what I got was "Error 769: The specified destination is not reachable." whenever I try to connect to the internet. I can connect to the internet from other computers in the house using the same modem so I know it's my computer, but I haven't the foggiest on how to repair that particular problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might go about fixing that? I'm afraid that since it occurred with a power outage something physically might be damaged, but I don't really know enough about computer networking to say for sure.

Take the network cable, plug both ends into the same router/switch to different ports. If the lights go on, the cable is ok. If not, the cable is broken. IF the cable is ok, you probably have a fried network card. Happens all the time here, storm front passes over, we get tons of calls. Power spikes from lightning routinely wreck ADSL routers and also pass the spike to the PC, where it breaks the network card.

If you can't find the network card in the Device Manager, it's a sure bet. Same if the cable was ok and you don't get the connectuion light when it's attached to the comp.

Already went through that list, sadly.

I checked the cable as you said and it works.

The Network card is definitely there in the device manager, I checked that since most of the troubleshooting websites blame the network card as not being enabled. It's there and it's enabled. However, the light on the back of the computer where the card is yellow, when if I recall correctly, it should be green when it works. Think the network card is fried? Cause the DSL modem itself works, since I'm currently using it. Only my computer is effected by it.

Are you even getting an IP address?

I have had this problem before, NIC was showing up and set up correctly but it wasn't getting an IP from the router.

Problem confirmed. My Network Card is definitely not in the Device Manager. What I thought was my network card was the firewire. So it's likely that it's a burned out network card. :x

Thanks for all the help.
