Word 2007 help

Post by dragon »

Hopefully someone here can help. I am trying to do the page numbers but can't seem to get them the way the professor wants. The title page can't have the page number displayed the following pages will be ii, iii etc up to the introduction wich will be page 1 in the middle of the footed. However the following pages will have the numbers in the header. Tried several different ways however all it does is mess up the numbers. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this.

What do you mean "mess up the numbers?" (A screenshot would be helpful if possible). If you just don't want anything in the title page, all you have to do is double click the footer to edit it, then click "different first page".

header/footer, page number dropdown, format page numbers, under page numbering, you can select "continue from previous section" or "start at". So just do the i, ii, iii numbering until the page you want to start the 1,2,3 numbering, then on that page, go to the option menu, select number format 1,2,3, and click on "start at" and type in 1.

Ok thats the easy part I need to be able to hide the number i on the title page so that the first visble page number will be ii on the second page.

Then in the actual paper page 1 will be in footer page 2 needs to be in the header. When I try to place page number 2 in upper right corner it keeps changing the location of number 1.

you could just manually type in "page 1" in the footer of the appropriate page, then start numbering from page 2 onwards.

Tried that the stupid thing will then automatically place a two on every single page, how do I turn off the auto feature or what ever it is that does that.

Go to Page Layout --> Breaks --> Section break "Next Page" to create a new section. In the "Format page numbers..." box you can select "Start at" while the cursor is active in whatever section you want to set the page numbers for.

Using section breaks is probably the way to go, yes. Also, I believe there's an option to suppress the page number on the front page, even without a separate section.

As a last resort, if nothing seems to work for you, and you need to hand in a physical copy, not an electronic file; print out blank pages with the right page numbers in the correct place. Then put those pages back into the printer and print the document. A horrible kludge, I agree, but it'll work as a last resort.
