Bios settings and boot list problems

Post by Alyeska »

Early in the week my GeForce 8800 GTS 640 decided to burn out on me. To my dismay I discover that I hadn't registered the card and it was beyond the standard 1 year warranty. As a result I was forced to purchase a new card. I had to purchase a card that would fit in my case with my Mobo design so that SATA slots wouldn't get messed up. I purchased a GeForce 9800 GT 1GB. Even still it was long enough to force me to reconfigure my SATA connections for one HD and a DVD drive.

Since doing this I now have a problem when starting my computer. It does not detect a boot device. Worse, when I try and order the boot list it still fails. Nothing I do in the Bios seems to work. It only registers a single HD in the Bios. On the SATA slots there are 4 bootable slots and 2 slave slots. When I monkey with the configuration on a restart I can get a screen to come up which asks me to select which device I want to boot from for this single event. A 2nd HD shows up on the list which I can select and the computer boots with no trouble.

Any ideas on how I might try and rectify this situation?

Swap your hard drive slots?

Is that going to mess with my drive lettering?

If it does you can fix it with the Computer Management tool, under Administrative Tools in the Control Panel.

Zod, that seems to have worked. I wonder if I had the diagram mixed up and was looking at it from an upside down perspective. Anyway, its working great.
