Computer PSU question...

Post by Dillon »

Alright, so here is the situation. I am planning to buy a new computer next week, and while I am pretty happy with its specs overall, I'd most likely want to upgrade to the GTX 285 (or 295, if I can afford it) eventually, probably add a hard drive or two and possibly add a Blu-Ray burner as well as a sound card.

I've tried various online calculators, and they mostly give me wildly varying results. I'd imagine the biggest concern would be the changed GPU, but the GTX 285 only uses 43 more watts than the GTS 240 which comes with the machine; according to wikipedia at least. The GTX 295 is a different story, obviously, but for now let's say I'm going with the 285. Will 450 watts be sufficient? If not, what would be a wise wattage to go with if taking the aforementioned additions into account?

Also, do USB peripherals really need to be taken into account? I'd imagine if their power demands are really that great, they'd come with an AC adapter, but I noticed some posts in various forums warning about this. Are they just being neurotic?

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Oh crud. I just realized I should have posted this in the "Rate my Rig" thread. If a mod would be so kind as to merge it, I'd much appreciate it.
