Treasure finding games

Post by Darth Fanboy »

Is it just me or has there not been a decent treasure finding game is Mischief Makers came out for the N64?

For those not familiar with this game, it was an entertaining run where you collected gems along the way, for every gem you collected it added additional time to the ending of the game so that you got more character development. The entire niche has been underutilized for well over a decade.

Remember those 'mother lode' games where you had to fight ghosts to find gold to get equipment to find the MOTHER LODE with your little gold detector? That was awesome.

I think the genre peaked out with Solar Jetman. (Surely I can't be the only one who remembers this game).

I dunno - I think the genre hit a low when that Australian educational gold-rush game allowed highschool students to discover the real way to make money during the gold rush - invest in market gardens and bars, then move to Sydney.

And exploit cheap chinese labour.

What was it in that game? You'd get the golden hand, the golden swan, what other "special nuggets" were there?

I'm not sure I understand what genre you're talking about. Do you just mean the presence of hidden items in games that aren't useful equipment, but may be money or give you a better ending? That seems fairly common in adventure and platforming games. New Super Mario Bros DS has star coins, for example. Admittedly I don't own any recent consoles besides the DS so I may be missing this deficit. I did love Mischief Makers though.

I dunno, if I felt some need to collect gems and gold specifically I'd just open up Spelunky.

The market garden was the best. Why go panning and get robbed when you can work for the slanties and then buy them out?

I would totally play that game right now if I knew what it was called.
