If they wanted to add complexity for no reason they'd just put in strategic interception silliness; having to guess vectors and scramble high speed interceptors ahead of the UFO instead of chasing it down. I really don't know why they think tactical combat is a good idea.

UFO's system is pretty easy to fix by just not making plasma guns huge range, high damage and high ammo. :)

Of course, it would mean human controllers are incapable of doing math, so the Big Guy has to guesstimate interception vectors :D

Well he DOES phone up pilots and tell them things like 'close it up' and 'argh run away'. :)

In any case it isn't maths, because the lead time means the UFO will probably change course. You'd have to work out the mission and likely destination.
