Shogun 2 demo

Post by Vympel »

Gave the tutorial campaign a go, seems pretty good. It appears highly polished, and none of the problems that have bothered me about previous games seem to have made their way in this one-

*No "why can't you chase down this one motherfucker?!" cavalry vs routing unit problems;
*The AI didn't appear totally braindead;
*Sieges aren't an exercise in frustration compared to the nonsense of Empire (don't know if Napoleon improved on this aspect as I haven't played it yet);

The smaller focus is welcome, as is the nice user interface (not drastically changed from previous releases, but still) and the beautiful 3D battle map graphics - the terrain is really, really good. And the units are very nice too.

Haven't tried the naval battle yet though - its somewhere in the tutorial campaign but I stopped before reaching it, not sure when it happens.

Just need to get a new PC to crank up all the detail to max ....

Quite enjoying it so far - liking the ability to actually train agents the way you want them to be. The Ninjas are as annoying as ever, thats for sure...

I am thinking about reinstalling steam for this. Is it worth it?

This is pre-WWII. You can sort of tell from the sketch style, from thee way it refers to Japan (Japan in the 1950s was still rebuilding from WWII), the spelling of Tokyo, lots of details. Nothing obvious... except that the upper right hand corner of the page reads "November 1931." --- Simon_Jester

Damn, I need an upgrade. I had every setting set on minimum and was only getting like 5 or 6 fps.

Apparently they already made a mod for the demo that unlocks all features available in the demos code.

I remember this all happening back when the Rome:TW demo came out.

You could fiddle with files and unlock a huge quantity of stuff. One of the things you could do was to edit the file defining the scenario to change the units, positions etc, but it wouldn't work unless there were exactly the same number of characters as before, so you'd have to put in a bunch of spaces or remove some whitespace when you were done...

All become a bit more sophisticated since then.
Apparently nobody can see you without a signature.

Playing through the tutorial campaign for a second time, now. Running good on medium on a c2d 6600, 3GB DDR2-800 and a 8800GTS and it already looks great. I have not tried higher settings, yet.
