Thing is, I completely disagree with that. If you are just after hardware, looking at Apple products is a waste of time. Because with them you always pay a premium for the user experience. Last christmas I had a stunning experience: almost my whole extended family instantly fell in love with iOS devices, after trying them out for very short amounts of time. (We had my old Touch, my cousin's iPhone and the newest generation Touchs of my father and one of my aunts, so everyone got a chance to play around with them. ) The huge majority of people don't care about the hardware.xthetenth wrote:He didn't write them because he was focusing on the generality that it's much easier to talk about the anemic specs than go into a bunch of detail on the software front.Skgoa wrote: He did not write that, so whats your point? Nice tautology you have going there. I never claimed that there are no downsides to the iPad, after all I have not bought one myself due to some of them.xthetenth wrote: Just because he didn't mention specific software issues doesn't mean there aren't any.
Well, I guess its more of a misunderstanding.xthetenth wrote: If you were just trying to channel the stereotypical fan, sorry, otherwise this objection doesn't make much sense.
Well, nerds who constantly need to tell me that I am a stupid little fanboy sheep anger ME deeply. This is pre-WWII. You can sort of tell from the sketch style, from thee way it refers to Japan (Japan in the 1950s was still rebuilding from WWII), the spelling of Tokyo, lots of details. Nothing obvious... except that the upper right hand corner of the page reads "November 1931." --- Simon_Jester

Sure, Apple puts a lot of effort into the user experience end, but in a lot of ways I disagree with their design choices and am perfectly happy with those of their competitors a lot of the time (Windows for example, I can only think of one thing (expose) that I'd really like in Windows, whereas screw the one button mouse and the inability to get a nub mouse (I use my laptop mouse in a way only possible with a nub mouse and it's a lot easier)). So I tend to get a bit annoyed with claims that their user experience is flawless. For the record I quite like my iPhone. I'm just not looking to replace it with another, the droid and WP7 phones both look really good to me and I'll be giving them a serious look.Skgoa wrote:Thing is, I completely disagree with that. Sure, I was taking you at your word when you said "You just attack the hardware because it's the only negative thing you can say about the iPad." I seem to have been wrong.Well, I guess its more of a misunderstanding.xthetenth wrote: If you were just trying to channel the stereotypical fan, sorry, otherwise this objection doesn't make much sense.
It's pretty funny how in most every debate the inverse of the golden mean fallacy is pretty close to true. The guys at the very fringes are a bunch of unlikeable dicks unwilling to weigh the other side and are very often wrong even if they're arguing on the right side. However there are also people who can present a good argument for either side with evidence to back them up, and in this case the specs are a portion of the experience that is easily quantifiable so make a good point for an argument.Well, nerds who constantly need to tell me that I am a stupid little fanboy sheep anger ME deeply. Care to point out where anyone is actually claiming their user experience is flawless?xthetenth wrote:So I tend to get a bit annoyed with claims that their user experience is flawless. Re: Recommend me a tablet
Back on topic, how much specs would I need to do whats required? The most intensive task I require of the tablet is to play multimedia file. Initially the Archos 9 looked fine, but youtube reviews show it being slow. That being said, some cheap chinese clones being reviewed on youtube can play movies like Kung Fu panda fine on like 256 Mb RAM, so it should be able to play my multi media files. IIRC the product was called WoPad, Wo = I in Mandarin, so I figure someone thought they were being witty or something.
This Chinese clone looks to have adequate specs for my needs. The only thing I have some doubts about, is that the OS is windows, which traditionally requires a lot of memory. While I don't have any experience with windows 7, I don't see why it won't require loads of RAM to run and may affect multitasking.

Maybe I was exaggerating slightly in summation. Maybe.Skgoa wrote: Thats bullshit. Specs aren't important, usability is. You just attack the hardware because its the only negative thing you can say about the iPad.
On the subject of the tablet, I'm not sure. 1GB is pretty light on the RAM, but depending on what you do it might very well be functional. Also, I was having a tricky time finding a netbook at over 1GB, and netbooks are still pretty butch by tablet performance standards if I remember right. The real problem seems to be this:
That might add quite a bit. Other than that it looks like a netbook turned into a tablet, which might change the use model up enough the performance is decent. It comes with a Windows 7 evaluation version for testing purpose only.

linky. Seems slightly slower compared to the ipad demonstrations, however cheaper than the Xoom and looks adequate for my needs. What do you guys think?

Ah, now I get it! I wasn't trying to imply that no negative arguments could be found, but rather that those two guys were using an underhanded debate tactic (i.e. ad hominem attack) because THEY PERSONALLY did not have a coherent argument. Sorry.xthetenth wrote:Maybe I was exaggerating slightly in summation. Maybe.Skgoa wrote: Thats bullshit. Specs aren't important, usability is.
