Expensive PaperWeight

Post by Alyrium Denryle »

OK, so over the summer, I got a new computer. HPE 510t. I can get you guys full system specs if you think it relevant.

In october, I got home, powered on the machine and got the 5 little beeps indicating processor failure. I re-seated the memory, reset the bios, and when that did not work, I called tech support, sent it in, and they sent it back unrepaired because apparently someone found a spider web in there and THAT must be the problem. Anyway, I got a new processor at my own expense, installed (correctly). And I still get those 5 little beeps (about 1.5 seconds in length, maybe 2 seconds apart. It is possible I misdiagnosed the problem, but we shall see).

The odds are not that high I have two defective processors. So what else could be causing this, and how in the ever-loving hell do I fix it?

Most likely the motherboard. Try to borrow a different PSU as there is a small chance the PSU is supplying bad power (noise, dropouts). If you are using discrete graphics try disconnecting and booting with just the onboard graphics. Memory problems usually cause a different error, but you can try swapping the DIMMS out just in case. You probably need a new motherboard though.

Agreed with Starglider. If it's making a bad CPU beep code after replacing the CPU, odds are your motherboard has gone bad. Unplug everything that is not required to boot, leaving just PSU, RAM, motherboard, CPU. Try to boot, listen for beeps. It's either the PSU, the CPU, or the MB.

OK. Replaced Motherboard and PSU... had to get a bigger case. On the other hand, my machine is now better off than when it was first purchased, and I will never buy a machine again. Going strictly to self-builds.

Thanks folks :luv:

Now you know why we build our own damn lightsabers. When it breaks, we know what to fix.
