League of Legends
It's been a year since this thread and the game has gotten more popular (4.2 million players a day). I've started playing ranked with a team of friends, but it's always better to play with a known player than face the dumb randoms you get in solo queue. So, does anyone play (or tryhard) League of Legends?
I tend to play attack damage mages, junglers, and Janna for support. I really like how intense the matches are and the amount of teamwork it takes to win, though Riot needs a bit more help in the balance and champion creation department.

And This
Are two prime examples why I will never, ever play LoL.
Firstly, I don't want to endure the endless whining of ZOMG UB0RLEETPLAYORZ drone on about what a fag I am and how useless and ultrasuck I am because I didn't jungle the weedlurkers fast enough so the laserdivers could spotcheck the flipwands. And If I'd only dropped PoDJORtS when the YAK set up the SoF, we would have won the match.
Secondly - what the fuck is a Janna magedealer damage jungle?

I don't often say things like this, but LoL is without a doubt the worst, most boring, repetitive game I have ever played. I gave it two weeks on the recomendation of a friend, and it will get no more of my time.

I'll admit it took a bit for me to warm up to the game. It can be a bit repetitive at lower levels, especially without friends to play with. League is in a very specific set of games which have their roots in Defense of the Ancients which is a Warcraft 3 mod (still being played). A lot of the game mechanics (especially in Valve's DotA 2) draw directly from Warcraft 3's quirks (in DotA 2 and WC3 you could kill your own minions, which was an encouraged game mechanic). In a DotA clones, players farm NPC's to get money and experience, fight the enemy team to destroy towers (structures that shoot minions and players on the other team), and ultimately destroy a structure in the enemy team's base. An interesting take on the DotA concept is Monday Night Combat, which puts it into FPS form.Chardok wrote: Firstly, I don't want to endure the endless whining of ZOMG UB0RLEETPLAYORZ drone on about what a fag I am and how useless and ultrasuck I am because I didn't jungle the weedlurkers fast enough so the laserdivers could spotcheck the flipwands. As for rude and frustrating people, they exist in every game. Compared to some of the other DotA clones, League is pretty tame (I find it on par with TF2 for complaining). Heroes of Newarth has built in voice chat and there is a lot of complaints of assholery. I'm betting DotA 2 will be even worse considering it makes no gameplay changes from Warcraft 3's DotA, so you'll have people who've been playing DotA for 7 years or so with people just trying it out. Leauge tracks player experience so that you're paired with similarly experienced opponents. I remember so pretty horrible games on both ends of the spectrum: I feed (die to the other team) horribly because their team just rocking me in particular, our entire team feeds, their entire team feeds, their entire team feeds me (dies to me).
tl;dr League is probably the best newbie friendly DotA clone currently and inherits many of the DotA and Warcraft 3 gameplay mechanics. It can be difficult to get into without any prior DotA knowledge or friends who have that knowledge.

Re: League of Legends
That's all nice, I guess, but at the end of the day I had more fun reading the character backgrounds than I did playing the game. But hey, opinions are like assholes, right?

I play with friends, and generally only with them. When you're in the same room as some or all of your team things are easier to deal with.

I find I prefer a voice chat server rather than getting together. Getting together can be fun, but when some people live out of state and others have desktops, it gets to be a real pain. I used to just use Skype, but after someone started paying for a Mumble server I can't go back to it.Slacker wrote:I play with friends, and generally only with them. Re: League of Legends
I'd rather play Demigod. Sadly... well. You know.
How can you say it's 'noob friendly' and then say it requires a specific background? There aren't any specific skills required for a DOTA-em-up, unless they build it on the conventions and particulars of WC3 (which LOL did).

Re: League of Legends
I meant it comparatively. LoL does not have a deny system, you don't loose all money on your death, and thus encourages a more aggressive play style. It seems a bit more forgiving than Heroes of Newarth or Dota 2, though I haven't played either.Stark wrote:I'd rather play Demigod. Sadly... well. You know.

I'm sorry, I cannot read anything seriously that includes the acronym LoL, no matter how accurate it is. I will be quitting now, since I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
