Recommend me a headset

Post by Jade Falcon »

I'd like a recommendation for a gaming style headset. My Plantronics headset got broken, and the position of the break on the headband means repair is out of the question. At the moment I'm using an Ozone headset, the one with the retractable mic.

I prefer closed earpieces, ones with large comfortable earpieces and a decent mic. The local PC world to be frank had a pathetic selection mostly consisting of neckband types and basic Microsoft and Logitech products. The only large one they had was a Tritton PC51u set.

The alternative is to go to my local PC specialist shop, this is their site

http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Headsets.html

I'm leery of buying off Ebay or Amazon, not because of reliability, but because what looks decent on a still image might be totally different up close. To give an idea, my previous sets have been a Speedlink Medusa 5.1 set and a large Plantronics set.

A decent mic is useful, but sound quality and comfort are the main things.

Any help is of course appreciated.

I'm using a plantronics on my PC right now, and I find the cans are too small for my elephantine ears and the build quality seems a bit pants.

I've bought my Turtle Beach stuff on Amazon and they've been really good with tech support anyway. I'm sure the other high-end manufacturers are similar. Turtle Beach headsets are pretty ugly, though (although at least they're not horrid cream anymore).

I've looked at Trittons in the past (I'm considering getting their Madcatz silly headset for 360) and they're definately more attractive than TB stuff.

I did find the Plantronics comfortable, but after a while they did feel rather too hot. I agree with you that the build quality was a bit suspect. Mines was made of a glossy black plastic and felt rather cheap, the mic also folded up to the headband when not in use but after a few weeks it wouldn't stay there.

Perhaps its worth investing a bit extra in either Turtle Beach or Tritton sets if they will last longer and be overall better. There are a lot of different headsets on places like Amazon, but there are so many unknown makes that its difficult to decide.

This is the Tritton set I saw in PC World and Kustom PC

PC World was cheaper, but that's because they had about £20 off the RRP.

Never mind, finally got a set of these

Roccat Kave 5.1's. The good thing about that shop is that they have displays of their headsets linked up so you can try them on, as well as running games and other applications so you can hear what's best for you, unlike a place like the local PC World.

Also, testing the mic, Alyeska assures me that over Teamspeak its a lot better than it used to be with my old headset.
