Kindle - which one to get?

Post by Tolya »

Alright. We've decided to move most of our books to my parents, scrap some shelves, repaint the wall - and get a Kindle. Problem is, which one to get? We don't really need the 3G connectivity, so the main question is which is better - the touchpad one or the keyboard one? The reviews I've read so far are inconclusive - for reading and storing books some people say that the keyboard kindle is better.

Do you, personally, have any preference for keyboards over touchscreens or vice versa? If all else was equal, which would you choose?

I prefer my Kindle keyboard because fingerprint stains all over my screen when I read would be distracting.

I have a Kindle Keyboard and I much prefer it over the new one. You won't use the keyboard much but at the start when setting up your collections it'll be a god send.

The keyboard for the Kindle is convenient, but the paint used on the key buttons wears away. Eventually you'll be left with a keyboard without any markings, unless you redress the problem yourself, e.g. with a marker pen.

I don't know about the touchscreen Kindle, but my Nook Simple Touch has a matte screen that doesn't show really show fingerprints all that well. The Kindle screen might be the same way.

I haven't even held a Kindle yet, so no. But I prefer not too have fingerstains over the screen, so that's one thing.

Well, MY Kindle doesn't have a matte screen and does show fingerprints. It's a tad annoying, but I try to keep my hands clean and since it was a gift I can hardly complain.

Since I use mine mostly for reading and do very little typing it's not been an issue. That, and the tail of my flannel shirt takes care of it.

I am quite happy with my Fire - also got a stylus for it. Works pretty well and you can even read Nookbooks on it if you sideload the Android Nook app.

Alright, yesterday I bought a Kindle Classic wifi. Why no 3g? Unfortunately amazon is dropping 3g support, so it is possible that the existing access points will be disabled in the coming months... too bad. No big deal though, I will just have to set up an access point on a mobile phone.

I wouldn't have thought so, Calibre can convert anything as far as I know.
