If I wanted to rip a blip video from an online review site to watch on my console at a place without an internet connection I could play it without conversion on my PS3. I can't do that on a 360. It's also not piracy because as long as I click to load the video the content creator still gets his ad hit.Stark wrote:Luckily, the 360 works with all the codecs anyone cares about. The modern market is about streaming and microsales anyway, and the 360's offering seems much stronger in this regard.
I think you mean PS3 is better for pirate media, but pirate media doesn't make anyone any money.
Thinking about buying a console

Re: Thinking about buying a console
That's a pretty narrow use case, and I'm not sure its really relevant to any significant slice of the population. I bet no MKV support affects more people (ie everyone who watches anime fansubs) but again, using it as a differentiator to buying a console is strange.
TBH I'm glad both consoles support the useful codecs, even if 360 has poor container support. Hopefully one day 'codec' will be another word nobody uses anymore.

PS3 won't play .mkv either, by the way. You have to convert or transcode them, and you can do that to the 360 as well.

I've found the ability useful enough to be worth sharing in this thread, but I doubt it's a make or break thing.

Anyone heard of Cinevid DRM on PS 3 ? How bad is it in terms of restricting watching movies you legitimately purchased ?
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
Re: Thinking about buying a console
I just remembered another great reason why I like the PS3, the Ratchet and Clank games. I just bought the 3-in-1 HD update for the PS2 games and I can't wait to pop that into my PS3 and relive some great gaming from high school.
Edit, I've never had any issues with DRM. Then again I rip my disks to my computer and then stream them to the PS3 or just watch them on my computer.

Re: Thinking about buying a console
Unless Thanas has already bought a console, Let me pitch in.
New generation consoles are coming out next year so best bet is to wait till then. Whether you do wait or you buy now, the deciding factor should be the games. Most games are multiplatform, but exclusives do exist, and when I bought my PS3 I got it almost solely so I can play play Demon's Souls. The PS3 also happened to have the uncharted and infamous series. It's also got Heavy rain. Now Dark Souls is multiplatform, but the ps3 version is the native platform and it's got none of the problems with hackers the xbox one has.
Games like infamous and uncharted are more interesting to me than the gears and halo series; and additionally I have an interest in games by Japanese developers and they tend to go with the ps3, so that was the console of choice for me. Xbox might have a hardware edge and a multiplayer service edge, but game developers will optimize their games for each platform, so the vast majority of the time there's hardly any difference in multiplatform games between xbox vs ps3. The gaming experience will pretty much be the same for either console.
So my advice: whichever console has the games you like, go with that and tune out the hardware spec wars (and the new xbox and ps3 are probably going to be pretty similar in power).

I'm thinking of getting one, too.
Primarily, I'm leaning towards the PS3. I don't really remember too much about 360's exclusives, but there are several I want on the PS3.

They are releasing a slimmer PS3. It's ugly and the loading method is stupid and cheap. Skip it and get the first slim if you're still keen on buying a PS3.SAMAS wrote:I'm thinking of getting one, too.

Is this really prevalent? I have used legitimate BDs since I got a PS3 and I've never had an issue with this Cinavia. I use AnyDVD HD at times to rip my BDs. They play back fine on my computer. There is no audio muting.Sarevok wrote:Anyone heard of Cinevid DRM on PS 3 ? How bad is it in terms of restricting watching movies you legitimately purchased ?
