Map making software

Post by Bedlam »

Can anyone point me in the direction of some, preferably free, map making software?

I'm planning an Only War campaign for whenever it comes out and want to try and produce some player hand outs to show the current and historical status of the war to recapture a planet.

I think I'm going to need both planatary scale and more local maps to show both the overall war and more local theatre's.

As its a 40K game a modern or futuristic look would be good although this being 40K historic looking maps may fit in just as well, notes of here be dragon's might even be accurate.

I have not been overly impressed with most of the free options available. I seem to remember playing with one Fractal Mapper and similar programs. They were functional, but the results looked pretty crap.

If you want your map to look any good, I think your only real option is the (paid for) Campaign Cartographer 3. I've used it for Deathwatch maps so it should suit your needs if you don't mind paying for something.

There are not a whole lot of free options for requirements of that kind. You have to look for them pretty hard and they all have their own idiosyncrasies, problems and limitations and the results would need to be processed afterward with something else.

So if it's ready made stuff, the Campaign Cartographer and its associated goodies are the things to go. I believe the whole package will cost you a rather hefty lump sum, but thereafter you should not need a whole lot.

Take look here: https://secure.profantasy.com/products/bundle.asp

It should display the price in US dollars for you, for me it shows GBP because my location is Finland. If you take just the cartographer, Fractal Terrains and Cosmographer, those three alone are going to cost you $120. Take a look at their website.

If you want to look at other tools, Inkscape can be helpful and so can AutoRealm. Those are both free. Or if you are good at image editing and can use such programs well, just plain old GIMP with the various Python add-ons can do. The Cartographers' Guild forums should give you a lot of good advice.

The bottom line is that if you want things simple and easy, you're going to have to pay for them.

GBP is fine for me to we still use them in Scotland :D

I might end up splurging on Cartographer for my birthday or I might just try to make very primative with Paint or something similar.
