Looking for game recommendations.
Well, I'm finally getting a new computer, and making the switch from Macs to Windows. I'm also going to take the opportunity to purchase some new games, and I'm looking for recommendations. Specifically:
-Preferably slightly older games, or at least not extremely demanding in terms of graphics, since I'm not springing for a top of the line gaming computer.
-My preferred genres are RPGs and real-time tactical and strategy games.
-I am already planning to get some more of the Total War and Batman Arkham series.

Well if you've not played it yet Ni no Kuni II is the game I'm currently working through and it's basically a combination Final Fantasy, light city builder light strategy and real time rpg combat. And features one of the most over the top bonkers intro before transitioning over to a nice storybook story. The Romulan Republic wrote: ↑2019-02-10 10:51pm

Aside from that the Xcom series I assume you have played how about the Shadowrun series? Shadowrun returns is kind of hit or miss but a solid intro while Dragonfall and Hong Kong each have very solid story beats and are over all about twice as good as Returns is.
A list of games played might help so no one recommends you the 30+ Warhammer games.

Re: Looking for game recommendations.
I mean, OG Dawn of War and the Total War: Warhammer games are pretty good from what I understand...
Emperor: Battle for Dune was a pretty decent C&C clone, and had some really nice FMV sequences. Of course, it's from like the 90s, so it might be stretching 'slightly older' a bit.
Humble Bundle, or maybe it was GOG? I think HB, had a nice Star Wars pack with I think all the KOTOR games. Not sure if that's still there though.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.
Re: Looking for game recommendations.
I will stick with games that can function on a toaster. Though TBF: most RPGs have a good showing here. I have nothing to offer in the 4X genre.
Divinity: Original Sin 2: Turned based-RPG with a myriad of builds (that can actually function). A decent Main Story with a rather large amount of side-questing. Here Have a gameplay vid with two morons. This is about the closest you're going to get to a modern RPG out there. The genre is pretty dead. There's also Pillars of Eternity, but it's still expensive.
On the Div note: Divinity: Dragon Commander. A combination of Dice Wars/Risk, RTS (with the ability to turn into a dragon during those segments), Visual Novel Simulator, and Princess Waifu simulator. You will love it or you will hate it.
Starcraft 2: I think up to Heart of the Swarm is F2P, but I can't be certain. It's got a decent enough story, Blizzard's standard CGI cutscene-porn, and a some of the most cleaned-up gameplay out there.
Undertale: It's cheap, fairly short, and deconstructs a lot of themes and mechanics in gaming. Turn-based RPG that apes the graphical style of Earthbound. Also, it's pretty good.
Dark Messiah: Might and Magic. A first-person kicking simulator, I mean, RPG.
Really, just troll Steam and GoG for sales. It's easy to find even older stuff for cheap, like The Dig.
Joke Option: SWTOR. It's F2P and there's a few campaigns worth doing. The Jedi Knight is KOTOR3. The Imperial Agent is the least cliche. Sith Warrior is pretty good. Trooper and Bounty Hunter are passable.

Re: Looking for game recommendations.
Ego Draconis is better (albeit different gameplay style).
is utterly broken and awful. Pathetically easy except when it's impossibly hard, largely due to the ridiculous lag as soon as a nontrivial number of units appear, gameplay is unbalanced and tactical design is hopeless. It looked like they spent 99% of the budget on the visual novel part (aka fantasy social justice the game) and 1% crapping out a generic RTS by a programmer who previously only developed accountancy software with a design document consisting of a blurred photocopy of the manual to Command & Conquer 1.On the Div note: Divinity: Dragon Commander. South Park Stick of Truth is surprisingly good for an RPG. Faith warning though, its rated M for a reason

Yes, I'm familiar with South Park's usual content.
Of the others mentioned, the Old Republic is one I'm considering already. StarCraft and X-Com I actually haven't played, but I'm familiar with them by reputation.
For a list of games played, well, I know I've leaving some off the list (mostly shitty little free online games I don't even remember the titles of), but the shortlist would be:
Age of Empires I and III.
The Exile/Avernum series.
Battle for Wesnoth.
Battlestations: Midway (played the demo for its sequel too, did not care for it).
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Star Wars: Empire at War.
Sim City IV and several other older Sim games.
Star Trek Online.
Batman: Arkham City.
Empire: Total War.
Rome: Total War.
Elheru Aran, is Warhammer Total War good? I've enjoyed the Total War games before, but I am not a big Warhammer fan and so was inclined to steer clear of that one. But I'm open to reconsidering.

I don't know about DoW, but Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2 is good, if you're into all four Xs of a 4X strategy game(I much prefer to just build spaceships and exterminate things), though 40K fans might be disappointed that there are only three possible endings, and none of them are any good if you play Chaos, Orks, or Aeldari, though that(and the bluies) will probably be featured in subsequent DLC, same as the first BFGA.
Also, certain special attacks, such as nova cannon, are nerfed somewhat in this sequel, but still devastating at the right moment, plus all three Imperial factions(Navy, Astartes, Mechanicus) have their own distinct ships, as opposed to stock Imperial Navy ships with re-skins, like in the first game.

If you enjoy RTS games, I would strongly recommend Homeworld/Homeworld 2/Homeworld Remastered (the last of which gives you both games in both original and remastered versions).
I'm currently knee-deep in Warhammer: Inquisitor-Martyr, an Action RPG that is proving a lot of fun.

I was going to mention this myself. The prequel, Deserts of Kharak, I thought was pretty well done too.Eternal_Freedom wrote: ↑2019-02-11 01:57pm If you enjoy RTS games, I would strongly recommend Homeworld/Homeworld 2/Homeworld Remastered (the last of which gives you both games in both original and remastered versions).

The Homeworld series also has several downloadable mods, including a BSG mod, if memory serves.Eternal_Freedom wrote: ↑2019-02-11 01:57pm If you enjoy RTS games, I would strongly recommend Homeworld/Homeworld 2/Homeworld Remastered (the last of which gives you both games in both original and remastered versions).

Re: Looking for game recommendations.
Note what I said: 'from what I understand' IOW, I haven't played that (though I did play the original version of Dawn of War, pretty good game, as were the next two sequels. Soulstorm is direly unplayable without heavy patching and mods though). The Romulan Republic wrote: ↑2019-02-11 01:42pm Elheru Aran, is Warhammer Total War good? But I do hear that it, as well as its sequel, are pretty good-to-great entries in the TW series. Note that it focuses on Warhammer Fantasy, not 40K. While IRL Fantasy is currently dead (it's been replaced by Age of Sigmar), the game has a LOT of different factions to choose from. So you've got a medievalish fantasy strategy game, basically. Think a 4x-ish version of Warcraft with a lot of different races. I don't know how many you actually get to play, mind you.
