Just a quick note, you should not be running 1280x1024 on anything but a 19" monitor, as that resolution was designed for 19" monitors. If you'll notice, it does not have a 4:3 aspect ratio because a 19" monitor has slightly different dimensions. If you run 1280x960 on a 19 inch monitor, circles will appear disproportionate. And running 1280x1024 on a 17" monitor will kill your eyes. :)
Anything lower looks pixelated, and I find that linux desktops need lots of room. Besides I've been running 1024x768 on a 15 incher for a long time, at 60Hz, so *shrug*.

Durandal, are you sure about that? Most of my friends have 17" monitors and run them in 1280*1024, and so do i....seems to work for us.

despite  being a good example of our current optical state :D

Well, running a 17" at 1280x1024 kinda starts to push the limits of what that monitor can do. Sure you can run it at that resolution, but things start to get darker, fuzzier, tinier, and harder t oread.

Draw a circle using some drawing app in the middle of your screen. It will appear slightly eccentric.

800x600. Anything higher and the screen becomes too spacious in my opinion.

Yep I've noticed that you can't draw a perfect square in the middle w/o having the edges of the monitor curve inward. Eh, oh well don't notice it since I don't do graphics work. Leaving a margin of space about half an inch works, but cuts down on space.

1152 x 870 @ 75Hz, on a 22"
I used to run a second monitor too, a 17", but I don't remember the resolution I ran that one at.
