Is this computer worth it?

Post by Gandalf »

This is a computer I'm looking at getting, when my finances allow it.
Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor up to 2.40GHz and Celeron® Processors up to 2.4 GHz.

Memory: 128MB to 1GB shared1 DDR SDRAM for excellent performance.

Storage: Ultra ATA EIDE Hard drives up to 80GB2 to meet your storage needs.

Drive Bay Options: Dual optical drive bays with your choice of CD-ROM, CD-Burner, DVD-ROM3, and/or CD-RW/DVD-ROM combination drive, and DVD+RW/+R4 drives to meet your mulit-media needs, and a 3.5-inch bay for floppy drive.

Video Graphics: Integrated Intel® Extreme 3D Graphics.

Convenient Ports Dimension 2400: Includes 6 USB 2.0 ports (2 front & 4 back ports), one serial port and one parallel port.

Monitors: Large monitors - up to 21" (19.8" viewable) CRT displays and 18" (18" viewable) Flat Panel displays provide easy viewing.

Sound: Integrated AC97 Audio
From what I recall, it costs AUS $1700, which I think is US $1100.

Do you think it's worth it?

I just built a computer for my union.

For a grand total of US$424.49, I was able to build a machine with the following:

Antec SLK1600 with 300 watt Antec PS $53.99
Celeron 2.0 Ghz Retail w/Heatsink $69.50
Intel D845 GEBV2 motherboard w/Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics and Integrated Sound MAX audio $100.00
256 MB PC2700 Kingston DDR $36.00
40 GB Western Digital 5400 rpm hard drive $50.00
40x TDK VeloCD CDRW $64.00
Floppy: $7.00

Shipping: $30.00

All from newegg.com.

If I'd spent $160 more, I could have gotten a P4 2.4 Ghz 533 Mhz bus instead of the Celeron, 512 MB DDR, and a nice 60GB 7200 rpm HD.

Toss in another $300 for a decent 19' monitor, and you've spent approx. US$890. Add $40 for a Pioneer DVD ROM, and you're up to $930 or so.

You can still build your own cheaper.

Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Yeah, integrated chipsets fucking suck ass. Once you upgrade to a decent card (say, nVIDIA GeForce4 64 MB Ti4200), you're getting close to the $1500 USD that my machine cost... (P4 2.53 GHz, 512 MB DDR RAM)

Have you considered AMD? They have better bang for buck.

Yeah, and they cut their prices recently, less than $100 for the 2500+ Barton at Newegg.

For even cheaper processors, "Thorton" should be coming out soon (Barton w/ 256K L2 rather than 512K)
