Weird Startup

OS= winxp professional edition

Ok....first time i boot up, computer updates the ESCD, then the loading bar thing (the black and white one that precedes the colour one with windows logo) gets a few bars in then stops.

Then i reboot and it starts up normally, goes right past the progress bars, and gets to windows.

It takes a while on the "Welcome" screen, then that disappears and i'm left with a small error message that says "Unhandled Exception at (some numbers)x(some more numbers)".

The unhandled exception has been there for ages and not caused any problems that i can tell, but recently when i transplanted cases it does this bizarre thing of where it gets stuck when you boot up, but not when you reboot with the reset button or windows.

Any ideas?

Hmmm Put's on the doctor's hat and adds the shiny mcse badge.

Let me see.

First off fire up good old event viewer.

Start-->Run-->eventvwr.msc

In the system log look for the last startup message. It usually has EventID 6009 note the time and check for any warnings or stop errors.

Open the application log and around the same time as the start event is there any waring or stop errors?

Well, i think that event id 32003 is the problem, it looks most like the error message i get.

Source = ipnathlp

Description: The Network Address Translator (NAT) was unable to request an operation of the kernel-mode translation module. This may indicate misconfiguration, insufficient resources, or an internal error. The data is the error code.

In words, the error is 0000: 0000001f which looks like what it says when i get the "unhandled exception" when i get into windows.

Also, today i had to reboot several times to get it to boot past that first progress bar, and this entry into the event log looks promising

event id 1001

Hmm according to Technet

This might be an error in the subnet mask.

Please do this:

Start-->Run-->cmd

Type ipconfig in the command window and post the result.

Forget that it is nat routing this applies to.

Are you running a server?

Anyways please type "route print" in a comand window and post

Post the preeseding error if there is one.

Also you might want to try and d/l the lastes nvidia driver and install that, Perhaps the missing driver is messing something up.

Hmm i think you may have a point with the subnet mask.

In the past we've always used 255.255.255.0, whereas this time the last number is 255 also.

I'm not running a server, but occasionally go to lans.

As for the nvidia thing, i've got the ati radeon 9700 and attempted to uninstall all my nvidia drivers when i upgraded, but the wdm drivers wouldn't have any of it.

There's no error before the various wdm driver errors(4,video capture service, TVTuner, TVAudio Crossbar, a/v crossbar), just "Application popup: : Machine Check: Regs."

EDIT: before the save dump information, there's only information telling me that the event logging procedure has started.

Also stop the nvidia service.

Start-->run-->services.msc find the "nvidia driver helper" or sumthing like that and stop it, you might want to try and set it to manual. Then try to unistall again.

I changed my subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, but still got the unhandled exception, but i took the time to write it down this time.

unhandled eception: c0000005
at address: 10001616b8

however i still don't know what causes it to stop when it starts, it just seems to not load certain sys files when i load it in safe mode.

Oh yeah, occasionally i think the graphics card comes out, or there's a problem with the mobo or something, because i sometimes get a desktop like this:

But it also fixes itself.

Please check if you have anything like this in your services "nvidia driver helper" if so stop the service and set it to manual.

Also can you post your IP adress,subnet mask and Deafult Gateway?

The IP and GW is the same.

Do you have a dialup connection like modem?

Oh and a tip, to enable cut&paste in a dos window do like this:

Open a command window Start-->Run-->cmd
R-Click on the Title bar
Chose propeties and enable Quick edit and insert mode.
Close the window and cjhoose the option Save propeties.

Your graphix card is shot. I has that Updating ESCD bullshit on a WinME machine (which has since buried itself nine hundred meters deep into a planet's crust after reentering the atmosphere at a completely excessive speed when the hard drive failed spectacularly on approach, leaving nothing salvageable) two years ago.

Replacing the gfx card solved the problem.

Awww turd. Maybe that's why i only got 3000 on my 3dmark thing.

FFS. best still be under warranty, piss me off immensely if it wasnt (ati radeon 9700)

OK, an update: My computer was pissing me off so much i hit it really hard and now it starts up first time.

Thanks Faram for all the help and stuff, although i still get the unhandled exception when i start up.

Moral of the story: hit my computer!
