Medieval: Total War
I suddenly found how much fun this game can be by playing with the Barbarians . At the start I consolidated my steppe territory and disposed of Novgorod. Then I built up a vast woodsman/steppe cav army and added it to my existing forces and swept down upon Asia minor and Syria. Unfortunately I let loose the Egyptians who "reclaimed" all the territory I conquered from the Turks and Byzantines and they are now the strongest country. Forays into Europe were no more profitable and I was deep in debt so now I'm carving out a home on the North African gold provinces. The Egyptians claimed virtually all of the Steppes but soon the Mongols will come.
And there is my disjointed AAR...

bah...Go the English...conquer Scotland...and get the cheapest unit in the game mass produced! Highland clansmen are cheaper...and much harder to get rid of....I've taken on odds of 4:1 with the clansmen...and WON with but one hundred casualties on my side to 900 on theirs....Cavalry do not stand a chance.
It really does work..

I never had much success with them. They weren't bad for their price, but I found spearmen supported with knights and pavise crossbowmen to be much more effective.Coaan wrote:bah...Go the English...conquer Scotland...and get the cheapest unit in the game mass produced! Improvements all around. Better graphics, strategic play, AI, etc. Can't wait for Rome...David wrote:Go clans!

So long as your clansmen are always on the move....charging etc etc....they will slaughter enemy lines of spear men as if they weren't even there....never have I seen an enemy decimated so quickly...JediNeophyte wrote:I never had much success with them. Eh... I don't take spearmen for their life expectancy. Against any respectable nation, they're there to hold the line while my heavy cavalry annihilates their support and general. And against lesser opponents they function much as any gigantic mob armed with pointy sticks would.Coaan wrote:So long as your clansmen are always on the move....charging etc etc....they will slaughter enemy lines of spear men as if they weren't even there....never have I seen an enemy decimated so quickly...

Clansmen perform pretty well until they get into an actual fight... then they get their asses kicked. Against any enemy that stands and fights them they get slaughtered. It's a bad idea to build an army around them because they're an all-or-nothing unit--either they crash into and obliterate the enemy, or they get bogged down and chopped to bits before routing and taking the rest of their low-morale comrades with them.
They're excellent for garrison troops, because of their low cost and upkeep and ability to kick peasant ass, but for actual combat you're better off with Men at Arms and good spears.

My rebel Vikings that were waiting outside of Denmark kicked the crap out of 4 groups of 20 Royal Knights and I nearly killed the King's unit but they started running away by the time his group was down to 8.
I'm thinking of editing the game so I can play as Novgorod and I'll Orthodoxinate the steppes.

You have to open up early and look for the list of playable/nonplayable factions and switch names (can't make them all playable).
