Dell Dimension 2400: Good Deal or Ripoff?

Processor: Pentium® 4 Processor at 2.20GHz with 400MHz front side bus
(Works for me!)

Memory: 128MB Shared DDR SDRAM at 333MHz. Performs at 266MHz for 400FSB systems.
(plan on immediately upgrading the RAM)

Hard Drive: 40GB ATA/100 Value Hard Drive
(plan on swapping that HDD out with the one on this comp)

Monitor: 17 in (16.0 in v.i.s., .27dp)E773c Monitor
(works for me!)

Video Card: Integrated Intel® 3D Extreme Graphics
(plan on upgrading this to a Geforce 4 or similar)

CD/DVD ROM Drive: 48x CD ROM Drive
(Walmart sells cheap effective CD burners for $99)

CD or DVD Burner for 2nd bay: FREE UPGRADE! New 48x/24x/48x Max CD-RW Drive

The main selling point is the low price ($500). After all, the person who's buying the thing (my bf Dave) is not very l33t when it comes to computers...

Erm, just build your own dammit, recycle your monitor...fuck, you're
gonna be reusing most of the components.....seeing as you're replacing
the HDD, Videocard, and modem.. you can get the same speced comp
for $200 less

Agh, good point. There's a computer store just up Terry Parkway from my house. Within Walking Distance. And they have really l33t Case Mods. W00t.

Actually, if you're buying a machine for someone else that changes everything. Get the Dell and a good support contract/warranty for him so if something screws up he doesn't neccessarily have to call you.

Actually, I'm giving this 400MHz Ratboat to him to use as an encyclopedia/ medical library terminal/Freecell/email checking machine. Something a POS can do easily. Besides, it's easily repaired as well.

Mine will be used as a high-powered gaming and (once I get into Blender) 3D-Modeling machine with Jukebox/Porn Repository/FTP Server capabilities. That's why I want a powerful computer that's also somewhat easy on the (right now completely nonexistent) budget. DIY/Barebones Kits are a plus: I love building my system on my own.

Erm....if you're going to be switching out parts, why even bother worrying about the warranty? You'll void it the second you open the case! Just do yourself a favor and built it yourself. Hell, do it infront of him so he'll know what to do.

Wouldn't hurt for you to explain what everything is while you're doing so. Besides, its a hell of alot cheaper that way.

Shit, to upgrade my curron Duron 700 to an XP 2600+ box would only set me back ~$300 (give or take a few bucks) just for the processor, ram, and motherboard! I'll re-use everything else and turn the Duron 700 box into a server!

Hell man, if you don't want to deal with putting together, I'll do it for you as long as you're within the lower 48 or Canada.
