Computer problem.

Ok, I'm on explorer, and for some reason on some sites links aren't working from me. For example, the hotlinks on collegehumor.com and the links not on the sidebar or top bar on gamefaqs.com. Also the drop menu on the forums don't send me to the board when I open and click or scroll through them, I have to press go. What the fuck is going on?

I've seen very similar symptoms in a few places, so I'm going to jump at a conclusion here, because if it is what I think it is, then time is important....

Run an antivirus scanner with today's virus definitions or the newest ones available (this is key, the virus definitions must be the newest).

Worst case scenario is that you could be looking at this bugger:

Download and run this just in case:

Because if this is the worm that is causing the problem, then your O/S is slowly winding its way to its death. It'll become less and less functional, much like a human being on their deathbed.

If it ain't a worm, then re-install MSIE 6.0 (or whatever version you run) from microsoft's website. You still might want to do this if it was caused by a worm.

Well it didn't find a worm program. I think what might of happen is that I'm on W2k and had a security update, and when I installed that it stopped working, so I did a hard boot, and I think I probly should of shut down my computer properly, but its straightened itself out.

Ok, started screwing up again, noticed the "has generated errors and will be shut down' message, and svchost.exe is the program thats screwing up. Any help?

I had a few problems like that with a previous XP install. What was happening was that some of the files of the O/S were corrupted, and the installation didn't go perfectly as planned, and so XP wasn't installed the way it was supposed to be. Obviously a format and reinstall fixed this, but it wasn't pleasant.

You might have some corrupted files. A format and reinstall of the O/S would be the quickest and easiest way of fixing this. There might be other ways, but I'm kinda in a hurry here as I have to take my computer apart and deal with an overheating graphics card here....

formate reinstall isn't really an option for me, decided to just break down and start using Mozilla

Ok, if svchost.exe is crashing then something is screwed up with the operating system. You need to goto Windows Updates and look for any critical updates that are out. Svchost.exe runs alot of things on Win2k and XP that are necessary.

grrrrr this is annoying, I'm not sure if I found it, but if I got 4 critical updates and and when I tried to download one, scvhost.exe shut down and I couldn't continue using the dl and intsall that Win Update uses.

Attempt a system restore to the last known point where you computer worked properly and then apply all patches again.

Well, I did a search on mircosoft.com and did something that may have fixed my computer. Something involving my dial up. I don't know, so far so good.

Yeah. So I found out I had that worm going around. Thank God for techies at work who don't mind helping with personal problems.

Now if only I could get rid of that tapeworm as easily...
