Axis and Allies

Post by Solamnus »

I hate this game. I hate this game because it is no fair. It has a built in advantage for the Axis powers early in the game and it makes it worse if people are totally inept in the strategy department. Japan and Germany start with a dccent amount of units and money while Britian and the USSR suck wind. The United States starts with little but has the best money rate; however, it is all the way across the damn ocean!

Does anyone have a good strategy playing the U.S? It seems to me if you have a friend who is an idiot and builds nothing but transports only to have them sunk while his buds are dying over in Europe, then the game is rigged!

Uh. I find the game quite fun (except when the dice screw me, which is often). For U.S., work on your Pacific fleet and hold what you have, concentrating the rest of your IPCs on Atlantic transports, tanks, and troops. You may want to try a tech development every turn too, those jet aircraft do wonders for the US. I also generally get a bomber or two over to Britain and do strategic bombing runs against Germany. 3 Heavy Bombers + strategic runs = broke Germany.

USSR is at somewhat at a disadvantage if Japan tries to press the east flank. Infantry are your friend. Cheap, good at defense and you can hoard them like crazy. A few tanks help with offensive too.

BAH! America is easy, you simply build in the pacific, and attack the Japs relentlessly to keep them off the Ruskis. After you crush Japan, you use your new found IPCs to squish the Natzis beneath your feet. (after of course conquering Africa First round)

Hmmm...I usually go with a Europe First policy as the US. Build transports and armor, and send them into Africa, then up through Syria-Iraq and into the Caucasus to reinforce the USSR. Send a few bombers to Britain to make runs on Germany, and just hold the Pacific. USSR can hold if US pulls back to Siankiang with the China forces, USSR sends units there, and forgot that far eastern territory, hold in the one just west of it. As long as Karelia holds out, Germany's flanks aren't safe, and armor in Finland Norway (assuming that's taken first turn) will be able to sweep into Karelia, Russia, Caucasus, Ukraine, or Eastern Europe. UK can also send some fighters to Russia, since Germany can't easily invade.

UK can also place a factory in South Africa to produce a counterstrike force against the Afrika Korps. UK and US working together there should be able to keep Africa Allied, and (as above) move to reinforce the USSR.

I usually play and win as Germany. Keep a decent defense on the western front and try and knock out Russia as soon as possible.

However, when I've played as the US. I find invading from South Africa and moving up works well on silencing Germany till I can concentrate on Japan.

I've never been able to win playing Japan or the USSR. I've won playing as Britain, but at a cost and a very loooooong game.

No no no, Britain takes Africa! Put a factory in south Africa, garrison it with some soldiers, and stat shuttling guys into europe through the Mediterranean.

And never, ever build a factory in India.

With Japan, ignore the Americans. Build a factory in Kwangtung or Southeast Asia first turn. You should be able to take the Soviet Far East (battleship bombardment plus transport plus Manchurian forces), probably China, and possibly India in the first turn. Building tanks on the mainland and infantry and transports on the Home Island will allow a quick invasion of Russia (who won't be able to devote many resources to a two-front war) and keep the US from invading quickly. It does rely on Germany keeping up the pressure on their front, though. If they get bogged down trying to take England, Japan needs to invade Alaska and shuttle forces in there to sweep through Canada and into the US. It's a much iffier proposition, but it does work sometimes.

You forgot about building a sub fleet to harras America, that can be a real bitch and it's cheap too. Especially if America decides to come at you with a huge surface fleet. Also if Germany falls Japan becomes Toast so quickly that it's almost a joke.
