PDA Recommendations

Post by Spanky The Dolphin »

I've decided I'd like to get a PDA for college starting this upcoming semester.

Are there any that some of you would recommend? It doesn't really have to be anything fancy: it just has to work. I plan to mostly use it for scheduling and keeping track of dates and assignments, crap like that. Price range would be about $200-250 tops, although that could possibly be flexable.

Oh, and I should add that I only have a little over a week before classes start.

If you don't want any fancy features, just get a used old palm or something.

I don't want to get anything used, and I'd prefer to have specific models or types recommended.

Palm 1xx series is pretty good for a cheap no-frills PalmPilot.

An old Palm IIIxe would be more than adequate for this. While an old design, it has 8MB of RAM and is easily able to handle things like schedules and such. It uses the PalmOS 3.X series, IIRC. However, it does not use rechargable batteries like the newer Palms - it requires 2xAAA.

If you want something newer, a Palm Zire is $99, though only has 2MB of RAM. It runs PalmOS 4.1. The Palm m130 is the low-end color model - twice as fast as the Zire, 8MB of RAM, PalmOS 4.1 and is $179.

All of the above have relatively low-resolution 160x160 screens and utilize Graffiti 1 for input recognition.

An update for those that care.

I picked up a Palm Zire at Target today for about $80. Quite nice, and I hope it will serve as a good introductory unit.

Oh, and I've named her Megumi-chan.

I have an old m105 that does most everything I need it to do. I can get addresses, roll dice, and play Pong...

Damn it, Megumi-chan keeps locking up and freezing. It's to the point where I can barely use the thing sometimes. I'm going to take it back and get something else, either a better Palm or some sort of Sony Clie.

If it keeps locking up you might have gotten a lemon. Exchange it for a new Zire and see if it works.
