Since I don't use word other than to open files e-mailed to me about my job, and I need to use Access anyway, I'm sticking to M$Office for now. I've tried OpenOffice and I think it's great but there are a few quirks don't like so much. Specifically, I find Excel a bit more user-friendly and I'm more used to it.
Ok, I uninstalled the OO help files, which increased stability in case one accidently opened up help, at the cost of documentation.

I haven't had any stability issues with 1.1 under Linux. Then again, I made sure to remove OO.o 1.0.2 first before I did the -net install as root, and the user install...

Well the thing is that I'm using unstable(well cutting edge, since debian unstable is still more stable than win2k) versions of everything, system libraries, etc .

You know, there's a reason they tell you not to use that stuff on production servers.Pu-239 wrote:Well the thing is that I'm using unstable(well cutting edge, since debian unstable is still more stable than win2k) versions of everything, system libraries, etc .

Just to repeat my question, but if I uninstall MS Office, will there be any adverse effects on the performance of Windows XP Pro?Darth Wong wrote:You know, there's a reason they tell you not to use that stuff on production servers.Pu-239 wrote:Well the thing is that I'm using unstable(well cutting edge, since debian unstable is still more stable than win2k) versions of everything, system libraries, etc .

Well allegedly Bruce Perens runs it on his servers. I'm running a desktop anyways, so *shrug*.Darth Wong wrote:You know, there's a reason they tell you not to use that stuff on production servers.Pu-239 wrote:Well the thing is that I'm using unstable(well cutting edge, since debian unstable is still more stable than win2k) versions of everything, system libraries, etc .
"Unstable" is actually pretty stable, it's just the occasional software package which acts up (apt-listbugs is supposed to prevent that, but I got too lazy to look up the bugs to see if they were valid (it lists often lists bugs that don't exist) so I assumed no broken packages on the last update. A reason that might account for instability is that I'm running parts of both rc1 and rc3, mostly rc1. Too lazy to build my own package for rc3 (since it probably will appear next week anyway, and since I'm not in school, I'm not really using OO).
Debian stable or testing is too hopelessly obsolete for me to use. Hell, they aren't even using KDE3!!, and OO 1.1 probably isn't available on stable except from some third party server.
Debian unstable is probably more stable then gentoo stable.

I only use MS Office since I got Office 2K for ten bucks and a free upgrade to Office XP from my university.

OO's inability to run VBA scripts and macros is a security feature, not a bugIceberg wrote:The spreadsheet is more or less comparable, but doesn't run VBA scripts and macros.

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

I'll look at it when OS X 10.3 ships, which will include Apple's X11 environment, which is how Open Office runs on OS X. Unfortunately, development of a version that will run under the native OS X window manager has been suspended.
Also, Apple have managed to sneak the ability to read and write Microsoft Word documents into their little TextEdit application that comes with Panther. It's not a hyped feature at all; it's just there.
Otherwise, I'll continue using iTexMac and pdf2latex for my mathematical and scientific documents (which are becoming much more common than regular essays).
