I'm addicted. Hopelessly.
To Naval Campaigns: Jutland.
The AI is set up for 25% aggressiveness for both sides, which is about right, considering the behaviors of the commanders involved. It illustrates that a ballsy commander for either side could have possibly won the war that afternoon.
Hit probabilities are about right, 2.7% for British, 3.1% for German, but that should drop off for the Germans should they have to re-aquire a target.
Critical hit probabilities are 3.5% for British, and 1% for German, which isn't entirely accurate, seeing as how critical hits occured when a ship was hit in a specific area, instead of accruing hits in general. But owing to AI limitations, it works pretty damned well. I lost Seydlitz with a single hit the other day playing Dogger Bank, nasty surprise.
One thing that I hate, but has probably saved my ass many times, is that ships are limited to 1 torpedo apiece, British destroyers generally carried 4 tubes, German 6, most in trainable mounts that would allow salvos of 4-5 "fish" in an attack. Oh well....
Another thing that isn't accurately portrayed is the ease with which heavy ships destroy light cruisers. At Jutland, the British light cruisers escaped the German battle fleet without damage. That was due in fact to excellent ship handling and a novel evasive technique, which isn't programmed in.
I've had undamaged German dreadnought battleships sunk to a single torpedo hit, and even if they don't get sunk, they're disabled. That's stretching it a bit. Quite a bit, actually. Especially when it's a Kaiser class....
I've been playing all summer, and have gotten to where my victories aren't just pyrrhic ones anymore. When I began, I'd squeeze a win out for Germany at the cost of all the destroyers, and sometimes most or all of the battlecruisers and always all the light cruisers, now, I'm winning and preserving the majority of those ships.
My best so far was 16 British battleships sunk, 11 cruisers (no battlecruisers, they got away), and 57 destroyers. That for the loss of 4 German battleships (3 of which were pre-dreadnoughts), 3 light cruisers, and 54 destroyers. This was in June, IIRC. These days I get fewer battleships, more cruisers, and manage to keep the majority of my light forces.
I've only played the British side a couple times, BTW, too easy.

Nope not possibul unless every British capital ship explodes in port from ammunition handling accidents and they and the French also forget how to lay mines, and the game would seem to be fully of very stupid mistakes which drain away most of its realism.Frank Hipper wrote:To Naval Campaigns: Jutland.

What it has going for it outweighs what it has going against it.Sea Skimmer wrote:Nope not possibul unless every British capital ship explodes in port from ammunition handling accidents and they and the French also forget how to lay mines, and the game would seem to be fully of very stupid mistakes which drain away most of its realism.Frank Hipper wrote:To Naval Campaigns: Jutland.

To a point.
The British while in AI will attempt to form a line, but the Germans scatter, each division doing top speed. That would never happen. And when you select a shorter scenario, like "Crossing the T", the German line is alsways intact, but the Koenigs are doing 22kts and the Deutschlands are stuck at a flat out 18.....
Flaws aside, it's a whole fuck of a lot of fun. And more realistic than anything I know of.

Do you guys give your unit commanders name of yourself and your friends. Or get attached to a paticular unit when you wargame? I just lost my tank platoon CO in Steel Panthers. His crew was Elite the best in my group when they got whacked by a big ass German tank with a honking gun. I think it was a Tiger. Anyway, I tried everything I could to get the crew under cover but they got gunned down by a GE INF.

Oh, I do get attached to my units. I hate to take casualties in ANY wargame (sometimes leading to a ridicoulous orgies of save/load or mission rpelaying just to save that one guy who died during the assault). Oh, how I grieved after losing the Rainbow Soldiers elite infiltration squad due to friendly artillery fire in Ground Control...TrailerParkJawa wrote:Do you guys give your unit commanders name of yourself and your friends. I feel for light cruisers when they're in range of battleships. So helpless, especially against Queen Elizabeths with their fucking 15" guns. One hit, one kill.PeZook wrote:Oh, I do get attached to my units. They only have a 3 knot speed advantage, and in the case of the older ones, up to a 3.5 knot DISadvantage.
Run, boys, run!

Good to know Im not alone. I dont save like crazy but I should. I just made a poor choice of support units ( not enough tanks , thought this would be a infantry scenario ) and now my guys are in trouble. Oh well, at least they are virtual.
Losing a Cruiser in one shot would have me screaming at my computer. NOOOOOO! Frank!! Frank!! * mourns the loss of Frank, the nicest poker player on the Lido deck *
