Well... I conducted an autopsy of the NES but couldn't find anything wrong with it. All the headers seemed to be fine (although they had kind of a yellowish colour to them) and nothing seemed to have burned out or anything like that. Perhaps it's not really dead but rather in a coma or something. I should try to clean it on the inside as someone suggested. Hopefully that will make it work for another 10 years or so...

You're sick. You were doing the gaming equivalent of humping a corpse.

Nah, seriously, I'm being a hypocrite. I just finished playing King's Quest 1-5 and Space Quest 1-5, and am now embroiled in Leisure Suit Larry 6.

There's something awesome about having to type "take cup" to actually take the cup.
It's not like I plays it every day. I just feel nostalgic sometimes. You know, remebering the good old days and all that :D

You might need to pull the header contacts out a bit - they might have been pushed in too far and no longer make contact with the cart.

Well that certainly does explain all the weirdness.
Actually, the weirdness is explained by the fact that in Japan, the original Mario 2 game was a Mario 1 clone, so Nintendo bought the rights and source of another game from a failing company and modified it so that their characters were in it. :)
Actually, Doki Doki Panic was a Nintendo game based on a then-popular anime, IIRC.

Yes that might explain why it blinks on and off most of the time.
