Man, I would think a Star Wars forum would have more on Jedi Academy. That's what I get for thinking...

I hope they finally implement the 'realistic sabre combat' command as standard- it was a funky hack, but the problem is that the death animations weren't designed for it, so you chop up an enemy and the different parts of him 'convulse' as if they were still being held together. Not cool.

I just want to know what the optimal system specs are so I can start hoarding my cash now for any new memory, videocard or CPU upgrades I need for the game to kick ass
I've gone to find myself. If I get back before I return, please keep me here

It's the same engine (Quake III) as JKII. How did that run for you?russellb6666 wrote:I just want to know what the optimal system specs are so I can start hoarding my cash now for any new memory, videocard or CPU upgrades I need for the game to kick ass

It ran pretty good a bit slow here and there I could use more memory but I could allways use more memory perhaps I need a new videocard but I can't see shelling out 500 bucks more or less for a videocard that will be outdated in like 2 months or something while I have a perfectly good Geforce 4 Ti4200 so........yeah

Same engine doesn't mean similar requirements. A game using the Quake 3 engine could potentially have much higher requirements because of modifications to the engine, more detailed physics calculations and all of that. Hell, a lot of Quake 3 mods have higher requirements than Quake 3 itself (like Team Fortress and TrueCombat) because they add particles into the mix.

JK3 will have almost the same requirments as JK2. Anything above a G4 Ti Series will run it fine.
JK3 will encorporate rag-doll effects rather than the lame death animations of JK2.
Realistic saber combat (while fun at times) is not good for an MP game like Academy. The duels no longer come down to skill, but only to luck. I'm sure since it's ragdoll, a mutilator mod would be much more realistic.

I still use a GF3 Ti200 and everything runs great. You don't need a new video card, at least wait until Christmas when Nvidia and ATI come out with their next gen cards and everyone's trying to dump their stock of 9700 pros. I'm sure some real deals will show up then.

That's not the main problem, the main problem is that the AI ain't designed for it either. They still rush you, swinging wildly like making mere contact with your saber won't kill them instantly. Also, I'd like to see some realistic fighting with actual swordfighting stances.Vympel wrote:I hope they finally implement the 'realistic sabre combat' command as standard- it was a funky hack, but the problem is that the death animations weren't designed for it, so you chop up an enemy and the different parts of him 'convulse' as if they were still being held together. Yeah, the JKII stances and swings etc were a strange mix between OT and PT fighting.Arthur_Tuxedo wrote: That's not the main problem, the main problem is that the AI ain't designed for it either. I found that fighting the last boss guy (can't remember his name) was extremely hard if you just ran around swinging your sabre, but far easier if you kept your finger on shift and calmly walked.

I once killed him in 2 seconds: Jump, Force-push to the ground, overhead sabre heavy style swing of death.TheFeniX wrote:Desann, and that didn't work too well on Jedi Master difficulty.Vympel wrote:I found that fighting the last boss guy (can't remember his name) was extremely hard if you just ran around swinging your sabre, but far easier if you kept your finger on shift and calmly walked.
Now we know that JA is 3 years after JO.

I'm excited. Needless to say I want to plug my site pretty bad... hope that's okay!

(currently devoted to Jedi Outcast, but we hope to cover JA when it comes out!)
Incidentally, Desann (and just about every saber wielding opponent for that matter) becomes incredibly easy if you fight them with Fast (blue) stance, and Force Speed. Just make a few sweeping cuts, and you'll have them cut down in no time...
I was much more impressed with Multiplayer than single, but I wished they hadn't "nerfed" the saber into a duel-only weapon in the later patches (it made the saber far less effective in FFA and CTF).
"Saberrealisticcombat" is a cheat, and kind of lame. Turn it on and the slightest touch of your saber makes enemies literally fall apart (total dismemberment) it also does incredible damage. Maybe that is "realistic" in the books of some people, but it means that enemy sabers are like nerf bats, whereas your saber is a death stick. I much prefer regular damage + dismemberment + blood patch. And yes, dismemberment in Multiplayer rules. ; )

The graphics are dated. But like with BF1942, the gameplay more than makes up for it.

The 'idiot-style' saber combat is still there, although it doesn't seem as bad as in JK2. Maybe I'm biased, but even Soul Calibre fighting is better than Jedi Knight saber combat. My patented 'Feather Duster' sabre style would be useless in a game like Severance. I'd like the emphasis on sabre combat to be on skill and controlability, instead of autoatic combos and dodgey collision detection. But then, who can get past the Jedi Knight Jedi Academy lame title disease?
The combat is definitely better than in Jedi Knight II, I'll say that much- the way it seems to work out is:
- Sabre-Staff: for 'heavy' style fighters
- Dual-Sabres: for 'light' style fighters.
- Medium single sabre: still the best style- not too fast or slow. Problem is it's 'boring'/'unexotic'
- Heavy single sabre: requires a lot of skill to get the timing right- not good for fighting guys with guns
- Fast single sabre: too short range, too weak, but good for blaster-toting wankers
I really like the new moves- I find myself using them a lot.
