Stupid Counter Strike (or other game) Servers

Post by Alyeska »

From time to time I have been on some REALLY stupid servers in Counter Strike. There are two in particular that I absolutely hated. Both had "No Camping" rules in place.

The first was a server playing the 747 map. It stated no camping. Well I start the game near the cockpit so I grab some money and cruise around a bit. Then I hear the cockpit glass shatter. So I crouch near the cockpit door waiting to ambush the CTs. Not 15 seconds latter I am suddenly attacked by an auto no camping program on the server and it announces to everyone "Alyeska is camping the cockpit". I start moving about but the fucking program makes you leave the area by 50 meters before it stops hurting you.

The second one was just today. It was playing Office and the rules stated no camping EXCEPT CTs may camp bomb sites, Ts may camp hostages and bombs they have planted. It also stated you could only stop for quick ambushes and reloading. I thought that was a little restrictive, but not overly so. I am playing for about 10 minutes when suddenly I am getting admin slapped. The fucking admin was slapping me for WALKING rather then running. The CT team had just been fucking wasted and I was one of only two people left. I wasn't about to run around so the Ts could hear my foot steps. The fucking admin kept slapping me untill I was at 25 health. The idiot realized I would not run and he finaly stopped. Funny thing, I won that round as the last CT with 25 health by grabbing the hostages, not a single kill either. Anyway the admin stopped punishing me after that point realizing it was pointless.

So it seems my two experiences have to do with camping on CS. Anyone else find some really stupid game servers out there?

If I was any good at CS, I'd bitch about the crappy admins that run most of the servers. I think it's an actual requirement to be an asshole when admining a server.

In J-O I've been kicked for using my gaming tag I've had for over 6 years, and then got flamed on the server's clan forum for trying to post a grievance.

The no camping rules in CS and TFC have gotten absolutely ridiculous. "Strategy" and "croutching" are four-letter words in most servers. But when a game gets that old and still has 15,000 servers online, you know the community is going to be pretty shitty. I have had good luck in most Texas servers though. The admins there seem more concerned with having fun rather than whining like 5-year-olds.

I keep getting kicked from ET servers for having a 'suspiciously' high XP count. :x

I have been playing CS for about a month and a half (Didn't even occur to me to bother until I happened to grab Steam), and haven't had any problem at all except for some rare teamkillers on FF servers and a slight lack of map variety on certain servers I frequent. I happen to enjoy croutching, waiting, etc., and think it to be a basic part of the game. I ever end up on a server like that, I'll just leave and find a better one.

Some CS servers are total crap, you have to weed out the bad ones and play with people you like. Servers that have websites/forums to go along are usually good, because if you are treated badly you can complain.

For anyone who lives in the Southeastern US, especially Florida/Georgia, I have a list of servers, about ~100, that tend to have good people in them. The list was originally 2564, i narrowed it down a lot. All get good pings (<80, but I have broadband). Uhh, it's for HLSW, but if anyone really wants I can just copy+paste the IPs into a list.

sweet, sweet surrender

That's why you find a bunch of friends to play with. We've got a dedicated server running over the school's LAN, with a friend as the admin. Dedicated record keeping available on the website, a nice number of mods that allow you to know how much damage they did to a person(after you've died), trail blood when below 20/25 health, etc. What's more, since everyone is on the school's LAN, there is virtually no lag.

See, that's EXACTLY what you do. Find friends (get friendly with a local clan, that's how I did it), and play with them alot. Through them, you get to know others, and you eventually have a nice big group of people you know and love to play with. They usually stay on a small group of servers, so you have a nice group of servers there. It works.

Other than the occasional whiners, one racist, and other things, nothing much.

There was one time when half the opposing team used AWPs exclusively (fy_iceworld). So we kept getting stomped.

And then they stopped using awps and we stomped them. :D

Ask the admin to setup a '1 AWP per team' limit. Worked wonders for our group.

Sweet... The best kill ratio per clip I ever managed was 4. I was playing prodigy when I opened a door, saw CTs and hosed them with my AK.

Once I was playing with my friends and one of them got 4 kills all in a row, all headshots. He immediately jumped up from his computer, held his hands away, and swore that he was not cheating.

It was hilarious. He wasn't cheating, cause he wouldn't pull that shit, but it was an obvious reaction. You've got to be REALLY damn lucky to, well, be that damn lucky.

I know how that works. Some times your having a really good game, some times its pure luck. A couple games I just owned the enemy in almost every engagement and next match people were screaming for my blood because I was cheating. Funny how I cheat when I come across three enemies who have their backs facing me...

Had one of those good days today when I stomped on a server. Then the fucking admin gave an AWP to the final Terrorist to replace his nearly empty gun and told the fucker what direction I was comming from. Got my ass killed. :x

Oh god that shit is phunny! Reminds me when I was playing Quake 3 Instagib CTF and killed 5 b00bs with 3 rails in 1.5 seconds on Q3W2. Well if they weren't all bunched up like that coming through the high tunnel onto the catwalk...

admins, and stuff like admin_mod, suck. I enjoy the game as it was meant to be played, none of this "spouting 100 chickens out your ass to give away position" stuff, and the fucking Railgun-like lasers that REALLY don't belong in the game, and the +rope command that lets campers get to new spots on top of the map that aren't textured, etc, because NOONE IS SUPPOSED TO BE UP THERE!

Some of the stuff is useful, like StatsMe (I loooove statsme), but the stuff that changes the gaming environment is just not for me...

On a side note, I once killed 6 people by spray-and-pray with a colt... fun fun..there's a screenshot somewhere...

Personaly I don't mind Admin Mod and AMX because they are very useful tools for the admin to control the game. Using the standard controls makes it VERY difficult to deal with problem gamers. Admin Mod allows the admin to effectively neutralize idiot gamers. The problem is when the admin uses these powers to make the game unballanced. That removes the fun factor for the recieving side. It would be different if the admin was using these powers for both sides for fun. I was on one particular server when the admin was randomly changing gravity while not telling people. It really changed how people played. Bunny hopping dropped to zero and some times we fear going down stairs (crank the gravity up to much and ANY fall distance is instant death).

That it does, yes. So do the KICK and BAN commands

My complaint is, the admins are allowed to do this. It's their server. If they wanna give all CTs godmode, they can do that, and noone can stop them. As a general rule, I don't go into AdminMOD servers, unless I know that won't happen, such as if I'm in a clan server I know...

What really pissed me off about CSers (at least on my uni´s LAN) was their love of those small shootout maps with no elevation. After a while, I instinctively knew where people´s heads were, and always kept my crosshair on that point. They eventually kicked me for "hacking" because "nobody gets that many headshots". When I offered to make a repeat performance on HIS computer, he declined of course because he knew I really wasn´t hacking and just wanted to stop getting his ass handed to him. Cocksucker.

yeah, you usually end up learning stuff like that, the guy was a dumbass to call you a hacker. It's just automatic to aim for the head, it's like putting your fingers on "w,s,a,d" and spacebar when you touch a keyboard (I do that )

If he really thought you were, he could install some anti-cheat. Some people are so fucking stupid, I swear. THey just cry "HACKER HACKER!" without any real proof. I tell them, "take a demo and send it to the admin". Or if it is an admin, I tell them to install a fucking anti-cheat and STFU. Of course, saying that usually gets me kicked just for "being disrespectful", but that's the price one pays...

That is a baseless complaint. Just because they can do that does not mean they do. I have plaid on hundreds of Admin Mod and AMX servers and I have only found TWO that were abusing those powers.

FYI, using built in commands to get people kicked and banned is bloody difficult when the person is using really hard to type names. You have to bloody type out the commands. Admin mod makes the admin part of the game bloody easy.

No, it's not baseless, I thought I clearly stated my reasons. I have played on hundreds of AdminMod/AMX servers myself, and most (probably 60% if you want a number) I either hated the modules built in, or the admins were abusing crap, or both. My opinion, you can disagree, I don't especially care. But I am gonna stay away from AdminMod/AMX servers as a general rule.

I agree, wholeheartedly. But since I don't admin a server, I don't need it. The simple fact is, not every admin is gonna use this stuff the right way, and as a client I choose to abvoid it. Yeah, I've found some great AM servers, and I play on them a lot. I like the players, I like the admins, and the extra AMX scripts aren't TOO annoying (roll the dice can be fun when the game gets boring.. ("Frito-Lay is glowing! But is it a healthy" glow? - 10 seconds later I die, fun!). But as a general rule, I hate AMX servers.
And to the kicking people thing, that's why you find a good small, out of the way clan server to play on! Not as much cheaters, etc as on a big, popular server. oh, and IP banning is your friend

If and when you actualy host your own server, I will think about hearing your own comments and complaints about AMX and Admin Mod. Untill then just sit down and shut up. Without Admin Mod I can state with fact that more then 90% of the servers out there would cease to exist because of the inadquate features built into Half-Life.

While I currently don't admin a server, I once DID, and it worked perfectly fine without AMX. Metamod/statsme WAS however installed.

Oh? Prove it.

(edit: well, no need to prove it, but please back that "fact" up)

I was playing DoD tonight against a group a total noobs. Total dimwits really. We were playing avalanche and most of them were playing Axis. And all of them had machine guns.

Well, I was a sniper (I dare say I'm pretty good at it) and was doing damn good. I had downed 17 of them, moving around as I did it. And they knew it too, they were just too dumb to use intelligent tactics. Finally I got up to 25 kills when they just booted me for camping.

Damn clueless newbs that think they're Rambo. :x

I haven't played Counterstrike yet, updating on dial up is damn annoying, I did update half-life and played some Classic Team Fortress, but never really had any problems personally, ofcourse I ran into more than one person who I suspected of cheating subltly, but I never called them on it, I just focused on them so they wouldn't focus on my teammates, like in 2forts, this one guy was a sniper, and I was too, and every time I took a position he'd strife and immediately headshot me, I randomly switched spots, and varied between croutching and standing and he always strifed from cover immediately and head shot me.
