Well, I've got the specs aside from memory(Sure memory is cheap, but I'm broke. I have only JUST gotten the 120 bucks from my work last month.), but it won't start up. Rather more disturbing, when manually checking the directory it was installed in, I found no executable for hte game.

I found the executable.. And found the error log(yay). It keeps looking for a folder that doesn't exist on startup: Homeworld 2 Demo\Data\Locale\English.

There's no 'locale' folder.

Okay now, I'd just like to know this:

Why is it that the computer is allowed to build units I'm not??? In every other fucking demo I've played, if the player couldn't build a unit, then neither could the computer. But NOOO, I have to be assraped by missle frigates and ion cannon fighters because I can't build them in response!

Umm you can build everything that the computer can.....

You need to research it first.

Make sure you have both a research module and advanced research module.

Here's a tip: build a research module.

You can't build corvette, frigate, or capital ship bays until you have a research module.

Once you have a research module, you can only build one type of frigate. You need an advanced research module in order to build the other two.

Without a research module, you can build a platform controller module and a fighter construction bay. You cannot, however, build Ion Platforms until you research them. This, logically, requires a research module.

In other words, build a lousy research module. This is like bitching that you can't build Seige Tanks in Starcraft until you build a machine shop, or that you can't get Ghosts without the proper upgrades.

Bull. I built both normal and advanced flavors of research modules, and the tabs for corvettes, etc, were still greyed out!

you have to click on them, and then build the facilities, IIRC... I haven't played that in awhile tho, I could be wrong...

Bull to you too. The screenshots I provided on the VERY FIRST PAGE of this thread are clear evidence that fighters, corvettes, and frigates can all be built by the player.

Are you certain the modules finished building in the first place? (hint: hit Q to see the build queue's progress) A research module costs 1500 RU: You start with a mere 1000 RU. Are your harvesters harvesting? (hint: use H, and they will automagically start harvesting the nearest resource field) Additionally, if you're building anything else (two facilities at once, plus ships) it will take forever for the module to be built early on, since everything is fighting for RUs in the construction bays.

Hell, I'll even play you online to prove to you that the player can, in fact, build all the ships the AI can build.

Your doing something wrong then. I've played the demo and I was able to build everything that the computer could. Is this your first time playing Homeworld, or a RTS for that matter?

No, he's played quite a few RTS games (pretty damn good at SC, for that matter).

I was over at his place checking out the demo. I own the first HW, yet I couldn't figure out what needed to be done after building and adv. research module to get the larger classes of ships. The interface is a bit quirky.

Fighter Bay -> Interceptors, Bombers
^+Research = Interceptor, Bomber Upgrades
Platform Control -> Gun Platforms
^+Research = Gun Platform Upgrades, Ion Platform Research -> Ion Platform Upgrades

Corvette Bay -> Gunboats, Pulsar Gunboats
^+Research -> Gunboat Upgrades + Pulsar Gunboat upgrades

Frigate Bay -> Torpedo Frigates
^+Research -> Torpedo Frigate Upgrades
^^+Adv. Research -> Ion Cannon Frigates + Upgrades, Flak Frigates + Upgrades

Capital Ship Bay -> Carriers
^+Research -> Carrier Upgrades

In simple terms: first you build the research modules, THEN you build the various bays (corvette, frigate, capship). Only the mothership can build a capship bay (for obvious reasons). Once that bay is built, THAT SHIP can build units of that type.

I completely agree with Alyeska. The game is an excellent upating of HW (even if the menu thingy at the bottom of the screen is a bit clumsy for me atm) however the changes to the basic game model aren't just a step backwards, they're stupid. POH has a fighter construction thingy, a corvette thingy, and a capship thingy. And yet it can only build one at a time. DAFT!
I never played HW:C much, so I don't miss the time compression...
Biggest problem for me is one I've had with HW since the start... wimpy, crappy capships! I can add a platform bay, a fighter bay, etc... but I want an AA bay with extra guns, or an auxillary engine bay, or a resource grabbing bay, not just research and hyper modules. In HW, who ELSE wanted to use the triple-ion ffs as turrets on the mothership? And the AA on the refinery is so small, they're just muzzle flashes, no geometry at all. I want to spend more, and beef it up a little.
