An exploit for AIM seems to be going around the net

Post by Hamel »

My brother just let me know about a new AIM exploit. Don't click on links from people you don't trust, because you might end up autodownloading a VB script that will jack yer pass.

I think that's how it went.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Simple: Don't click a URL that ends in .vbs.

simpler: don't be fekking stupid and click links from AIM in the first place.

(oh, and Einy, you can dress links in AIM, and some people don't look at the real link before opening it)

Hamel: details on this? is there a news article somewhere?

I heard it from my brother. He's kinda sorta into the cracker stuff. He has 100s of stolen AIM accounts.

I don't know anything else beyond what he told me

*cough*

I wouldn't want to admit that on a BBS, if I were you, but whatever.

I will just take this with a grain of salt until I see it reflected somewhere else. But anyway, the "don't click aim links" stuff is kinda just common sense...

ALWAYS copy the link, then paste to make sure it's what it seems like it is... Also useful for leaving no trace of you visiting somebody's subprofile.

I always copy links outta Trillian before opening em. Besides, I don't think Mozilla would know what to do with a .vbs anyway...

Violation of what, Spanky? He just said his brother has a bunch of cracked accounts, which while not the best thing to say, is AFAIK not against board policy.

Well the policy is just "No discussion of illegal activities" so it could be considered a violation, or equally easily not to be one.

Looks like a hueuuege nitpick to me, but if the mods want to scold me there's nothing I can really say about it.

And I wasn't trying portray what he does as a positive thing

You're in the clear, but you really should show more discretion.

Go into the registry and remove the entry in question or use the Startup Control Panel (google search for it) if you want an easier way to do it.

I've been a longtime AIM user, so I prefer it.
