Best Sound Clip Format?

Post by Lord Poe »

I have a bunch of audio clips I want to put on my website, but a few of them are 5 minutes long or more. What would be the best format to use?

.wavs- I'd have to zip these for sure. .rm? .mp3? And should these be zipped?

Definately mp3

Wav is too big a file size
Realplayer files are crap, because RP itself is crap
Mp3 is the way to go

Even if your audio clips are low quality, use mp3 anyway
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Personally, and I'm going to be hanged for this, I'd say WMA format.

What about .ogg? It's an open source, smaller filesize than mp3, better quality, and Winamp can play it fine.

For the best inter-platform compatibility, use MP3s. You can get decent filesizes if you encode them at some low bitrate (48 to 64 KB/s or lower) since I presume you're encoding spoken word and possibly limited music.

RealPlayer sucks, and WMA isn't exactly an open standard cross-platform format.

Anything but Real and Windows Media.

Best would be OGG or MP3.

What size are the files in question?

BURN IN HELL WINDOWS WHORE!!!

Besides not choosing WMA, and would also suggest you not choose RM either. I strongly recommend MP3.

MP3 using the FHG codec (bundled with most versions of Windows), since that one handles low-bitrates better than LAME.

Thanks, everyone. Looks like it will be mp3. Is there a good wav to mp3 conversion tool online, or should I just buy one?

Yes, the files are spoken word. Many I'm going to upload have to do with Trek and Wars. One of the funniest is a Howard Stern reporter asking David Prowse if he farted in the Vader costume and basked in the stench.

Windows should come with an MP3 codec; you can usually have WinAMP's "WAVE Output" export anything you want.
