Comcast's broadband is a total fuck story.
OK a few days ago, they fucked up the SSL certificates on their mail
servers, making it now as open as a $5 whore. Shortly after, they
managed to fuck over their DNS server. Funny when you can't
connect to www.comcast.com.
Now their mail server has decided to randomly appear and disappear off
the net. I'm seriously thinking of hopping to another broadband provider.

You, at least, have an option on cable providers, right? I either stick with Comcast bullshit or go to DSL.. which I can't do cos I owe the damned phone company almost $200.MKSheppard wrote:OK a few days ago, they fucked up the SSL certificates on their mail

Comcast is a government granted monopoly. I would love it if theverilon wrote: You, at least, have an option on cable providers, right?
Montgomery County Government would allow us to have a choice
of cable companies....

Ouch. I think Comcast is the only cable provider in all of New Mexico.. It sucks. I wonder if there are any decent DSL providers around here.....?MKSheppard wrote:Comcast is a government granted monopoly. I would love it if theverilon wrote:You, at least, have an option on cable providers, right?

I got an option of either Cox, or RCN (I think). Both do not let you run servers, even if you get no traffic. DSL not available.

Yeah, I hate Comcast. I'm on a uni connection now, though, so it doesn't matter.

Important for Everyone Interested in High-Speed Internet by Quantam at 8:32 PM - Monday, September 15, 2003
Hello, everyone. I'd like to take a minute to tell you about a very special internet service provider called Comcast.
In the four months we've been on Comcast cable internet, we have been overcharged every single month, ranging from $290 overcharged the first month to $50 this last month (amounts in US $; note that each time the matter was ultimately resolved by spending large amounts of time on the phone with a 'customer service representative', including several instances of the entire conversation being disregarded and continuing to receive various threats from Comcast afterwards).
In addition, in those four months, our service has been disconnected once, and we were threatened a second time; both times for 'failure to pay', when said payment had been received and processed each time before the due date (typically a week or two before said threats begin).
Of course, this list doesn't even include some of Comcast's unsavory business practices, such as charging customers of cable ISPs that Comcast buys (AT&T Broadband Internet comes readily to mind) a full one and a half times the cost that Comcast customers pay.
In conclusion, if you're looking to spend four or five hours on the phone each month with a customer support representative, pay multiple times the price of cable internet due to consistent overcharges, routinely receive threats of disconnection for no actual reason, and the occasional service disconnection without warning, I cannot recommend Comcast highly enough.
If, on the other hand, you want reliable, maintenance-free, high-speed internet, look someplace else. If Adelphia or another cable provider is available in your area, get it. If no such provider is available, get DSL. There are a large number of good DSL providers both national and local.
Thank you for your time. I now return you to your regularly scheduled doldrums.

I've never used Cable for internet access, but when Comcast raised my rates two months in a row for cable tv I downgraded to the most basic package possible.
Ive been very happy with my DSL provider except for a couple of billing mix ups. I never got overcharged or anything but I did have to make a couple of phone calls.

I've been using Comcast since mid-June, and I've had no problems other than a couple of go-nowhere 'disconnects' that last about 3 minutes at 2am. Haven't overcharged, haven't bitched at me for my heavy usage (Ah, BitTorrent)... I haven't had to reset my router or my modem since it was installed (and I've had the same IP since then, too).
Phil: Newsgroups are still free, but you've got to sign up and you're limited to a gig a month. I've been meaning to look at other Usenet providers (I saw one somewhere that was uncensored, unlogged, and $10/month, but I can't remember the name now. Started with an 'A'), but haven't gotten around to it yet (as it stands, I usually download 3/4 of a gig in the first week, and only do text stuff until I get my monthly allocation back).
