How do you take screenshots off a VCR?

Post by Shadow WarChief »

Well? I'm getting into a debate (not STv.SW) on another board and a I need some pictures to support my position and I don't have a DVD copy of the series in question.

So how do you take screenshots off a VCR?

Uts and I use an external Dazzle capture card for screencaps. Should set you back ~$100-250, I think...

I always pause the VCR, and take a pic with my digital camera.

Then in PSP I try to get rid of the fuzzy lines.

Since my camera makes images 2400x2400+, when I shrink them, they don't look too crappy.

That's a pretty poor way of doing things. Capture software would be your best bet, after some post-processing to clean it up.

I think your best bet is to get them of Kazaa or some such.

Or get a dedicated video capture card.

Video capture cards are cheap. Pinnacle Studios even sells one that's a USB device, so you don't need to open up the box.

The Brooktree-based ones are also pretty cheap and you can use toys like VirtualDub and AVISynth with it.

But doesn't that mean piss poor quality, as it's limited by the bandwidth of
the USB port?

Given that most of them are USB 1.1 devices, yeah. Thats why most people recommend firewire capture devices if you want an external module.

My Radeon 9000 I got for $60 has video in/video out that can have television video input by RCA and S-video. Its quality is quite good.
