Question about installing a sound card

Post by Superman »

I just installed creative's 4.1 sound card (I have their 4.0 speaker setup). Here is what I want to know.

Why the heck are my MP3's skipping now? When they play, they actually skip! How can I fix this?

It's probably Creative's drivers. Creative Labs has a long and sordid history of shitty drivers. Some of their early LiveWare drivers were so fucking atrocious that they would actually hose an NT install.

Oh, I think I uninstalled the audio codec in the BIOS menu. Could that have an effect?

A codec is a piece of software, not something you would install or uninstall in the BIOS menu. You must be messing up your terminology.

It also occurred to me that it might be some kind of IRQ problem.

If you're using Winamp, go to the plugins directory and delete any Creative Nomad DLLs that are in there (these are added automatically by the Live! and Audigy driver sets; they're usually named gen_nomad.dll). Those royally screw over MP3 playback with no real gain.

D. Wong, what is IRC?

Arghhh! They are still skipping. What the hell? Could it maybe be that some other program is running that is causing this?

Creative Labs hards have been known to not play nicely with motherboards using older VIA chipsets -- there's a flaw in the VIA chipset that causes problems with the Creative Labs soundcard.

Yes, get the latest Via Hyperion drivers (if that is indeed your chipset) and download Creatives latest. Do the chipset drivers first, then the soundcard.
