It's part of the balance cycle as well. Lasers of all types were utter garbage just a while ago, and Gallente Blaster/Droneboats were all top of their class. As it is however, I'm quite sure that they're just fine, since you can't really mess up the Megathron.

Re: EVE beginner
Okay, so I've finished my trial, and I learned a few things personally:
1) Backup is always good to have, and the game is immensely more enjoyable if you have someone else to play with. Doing things solo gets fairly dull and feels sort of like a chore.
2) Having a Salvager and skill in Salvaging can make Level 1 missions immensely more profitable. It can also make them a little more dull and time consuming, but getting a million ISK worth of junk from pirates when the mission only pays 100,000 is nice.
3) If you warp into the Encounter and your shields are almost instantly taken out by weapons fire, do not go "hurf hurf well that's okay I'm an armor tanker, taking out my shields is just a practicality!". Especially if missiles are what took down your shields almost instantly.
4) Lowsec and nullsec aren't actually that bad, as long as you stay careful and keep on your toes and don't linger in the more populated systems.
When all's said and done, I enjoyed EVE. It wasn't a bad game. Not sure if I'll pick it up again any time soon. It costs a considerable investment of either time or money. I have plenty of the former, but I enjoy using it for things other than EVE, and I have very little of the latter. I might pick it up again one day, though, when things are more stable for me financially, and if I can find some friends to fly with regularly.
