Fleet Tender Glorious Return
Third War Cluster
Jormungandr System

The Glorious Return hung in space. Her complement of attached asteroids and tethered construction slips were being sloughed off, as workers prepared the mammoth craft for interstellar travel. He holds were filled with fuel and supplies for the entire 3rd War Cluster- A fleet equipped to invade and conquer even a heavily fortified world. The Glorious Return was accompanied by a swarm of troop transports, each one carrying dozens of dropships. Total military strength amounted to roughly 30 divisions of Hajr Army troops and 10 divisions of Marines. A small force, but when augmented by orbiting firepower, neigh unstoppable.

The largest Warships off the Third War Cluster were drawing up around the mothership. Two Cataphracts- The Dominance of Primates and the Pinnacle of Evolution- along with a swarm of assorted small escorts, made up the Cluster's 1st Cataphract Swarm. The 3rd War Cluster's four Attack Carriers, and their escorts, were broken up into two groups- the 1st and 2cnd Carrier Swarms.

Finally, the fast striking elements of the War Cluster were assembled. The 1st, 2cnd, 3rd, and 4th Strike Swarms each held a quartet of Expansion of Civilization-class Strike Cruisers, while the 5th Strike Swarm had three of the new-model A Brief Life Burns Brightly -class Strike Cruisers, in addition to a single Civilization class.

Fully assembled, the War Cluster began transition to FTL speeds. The largest vessels would arrive at the edge of Covenant space in three days, roughly 18 hours after the Strike Swarms would arrive.

For the first time in a century, warships bearing Floater black went to war against a soverign power.

This is what amounts for propaganda/news.

As I walk through the Covenant where inflict some pain
I take a look at the priest and realize its very maimed
But that’s just perfect for a Bard like me
You know I shun fancy things like technology
At 4:30 in the morning I’m casting spells
Jebediah telleports the chickens and jacob chants... fool
And I’ve been castin’ and chantin’ so long that
Even ezekiel thinks that my mind is gone
I’m a man of the land, I’m into discipline
Got a spellbook in my hand and a beard on my chin
But if I finish all of my chores and you finish thine
Then tonight we’re gonna party like it’s the year of the sword

We been spending most our lives
Living in an arcane paradise
I’ve casted maic missile once or twice
Living in an arcane paradise
It’s hard work and sacrifice
Living in an arcane paradise
We sell scrolls at a discount price
Living in an arcane paradise

The Coventant's currency dropped the ball this week
I just smiled at them and I raided their commerce lanes
I really don’t care, in fact I wish them well
’cause I’ll be laughing my head off when their in the nine hells
But I ain’t never punched a cultist even if he deserved it
An wizard with a ’tude?
You know that’s unheard of
I never wear buttons but I got a cool hat
And my homies agree
I really look good in black... fool
If you come to visit, you'll be charmed to tears
We haven’t had inflation in 300 years
But we ain’t really great, so please don’t point and stare
We’re just technologically impaired

There’s no phone, no lights, no motorcar
Not a single technology
Like children of Netheril
It’s as magical as can be

We been spending most our lives
Living in an arcane paradise
We’re just plain and simple guys
Living in an arcane paradise
There’s no time for sin and vice
Living in an arcane paradise
We don’t fight, we all play nice
Living in an arcane paradise

Hcastin’ up the spells, churnin’ lots of magic
Raised the dead on monday, soon I’ll summon a demon
Think you’re really powerful?
Think you’re pure in mind?
Well, I know I’m a million time as humble as thou art
I’m the brainy guy the little mageleings wanna be like
reading books day and night scorin’ points for the ritual cast
So don’t be vain and don’t be whiny
Or else, my brother, I might have to get medieval on your heinie

We been spending most our lives
Living in an arcane paradise
We’re all crazy arcanists
Living in an arcane paradise
There’s no cops or traffic lights
Living in an arcane paradise
But you’d probably think it bites
Living in an arcane paradise

Ahh-ahh-ahh-ahh-ahh-ahh
Ahh-ahh-ahh-ahh-ahh-ahh-yecch!

Now for a news Bard Song

Sung to the tune of greensleeves

And then the Covenent attacked the republic of na'ashtar
The Arcane Empire led the way by being the first to de'clare war

They raided colonies and bombarded mines to hell.
The Covenant suffered from an economy what was not prepared for war

Their ind'ustry started collapse due to lack of recources
Our fleets are still going strong and the homeland remains unscathed.

The light destroyers of the Third fleet surged ahead with the Nashtar frigates and fighters, using their speed to dart around Covenant positions while hammering them with weapons fire. The battleships, frigates and dreadnaught belched out a swarm of fighters and interceptors that moved in to assist with the attack.

Scrying showed that there was no fleet around Ix'agal and that the vast majority of the fleet was en-route to Corridan IV

And such was the perfect time to strike

The 6th Arcanian Fleet eme3rged from the astral plane and immediatly got to work bringing down the planetary shield

the opening broadside released several hundred gigatons into the shields, and that number multiplied by one and a half when the single decker ships turned their dorsal sides toward the planet, thus bringing both broadsides to bear.

Mages stood at the ready to attempt to counterspell anything the Clerics tossed at them, while astropaths warned of any cloaked ships and stood ready to intercept enemy fire

Negotiations in the Verrik system:

Faran Tor sat across from the Arcane Ambassador. He was exhausted but satisfied. The long hours of negotiations had finally yielded what looked like successful results. The Arcane scribe had just begun to summon a contract when Tor's personal transmitter started buzzing. Tor hesitated, then stood up, putting the receiver in his year.

"Hold on a minute, I have to take this." Tor strode to the far end of the room, too far for the mage to hear what was being said, although some of Tor's speech could be heard.

"Hello, sir.... yes, everything's fine, here. We were just going over some.... no.... actually, I was just about to.... you don't say?" His voice picked up a bit. "Really?... Well, I guess that's that, then.... Sure, I understand. See you in a bit."

He turned back to the Arcane Ambassador, standing there with contract in hand.

"Terribly sorry. Something came up. Hate to run and all, but I guess that's that."

"But the contract," the ambassador began. (OOC: Sorry for speaking for you at all, here)

"Forget it." Tor headed for the door. "Nice talking to you though. Be sure to call."

Back at the Combine base, Adar Krell turned off his communicator and turned to a datacard on the desk. He tapped it twice, examined the numbers it displayed, then turned to his personal monitor to confirm the large transfer of funds. He smiled to himself. Sometimes it was more profitable not to fight. He quickly tapped the monitor again to send his newly acquired funds off to another account: The Sirius Construction yards.

On Sirius, the shipyards began to produce:
1 LANCE-CLASS DESTROYER
15 MISSILE FRIGATES
10 BOMBARDMENT DESTROYERS

The senate room was hushed; it wasn’t every day an emergency meeting of the Homeworld Senate was called, after all, the next scheduled meeting was only two standard weeks off. The Order Police had even gotten rid of the press, no one knew what to think, but this certainly was reason for concern.
Finally Malak Braaen, a lead research scientist at the Homeworld Astronomical Academy, entered the senate room, followed closely by a pair of Order Policemen. He moved to the speaker’s podium in the center of the senate chamber and addressed the Homeworld Senate.
“Two days ago,” he paused, unsure of himself. “Journey Drive Corporation’s private communications telescopes intercepted a transmission.” He paused again to collect himself as the entire senate looked at him with indignation. “The transmission was from an unknown source, outside the Commonwealth; this morning I confirmed its origins are,” his voice began to flutter, “alien.” The senate room grew completely silent, but only for a moment, quickly being shattered by Senator Leenhau.
“What proof, Professor Braaen, do you have of “aliens”? This is not the first time your agency has come before the senate proclaiming to have found aliens!” she roared. Being one of the eldest members of the Homeworld Senate, she was set in her ways and had no desire to upset the delicate balance she had helped to create within the Baeloaren Commonwealth.
“See for your self.” Malak replied and activated the senate chamber’s hologram projector. A harsh looking face appeared. "You may repulse our efforts, but know this-if you invade the holy lands, you shall . . . en men. . . are only doing as our Lord comman... unnerving that men . . . to preserve their own … profess . . . harm shall come to you . . .” the words seemed to leap off the hologram, the senators sat baffled, in ten minutes their whole view of the universe had been shattered.
As the hologram faded Malak Braaen spoke once more. “This is all our computers could decipher, though I expect the message goes on. Though it has been difficult to locate the exact source of the signal, I am certain it was not directed at us,” the hologram projector flared to life, drawing an image of the known galaxy, “We believe that the message originated somewhere in this region of the galaxy.” pointing to a lit up cluster of stars on the star map.

Elsewhere, a small cruiser hung silently above a dead planet, nearly two weeks by standard FTL travel from the nearest Baeloaren colony. The ship was long, sleek and had the words Megaron Industries painted on each of its broadsides, it was a Megaron, built to impress. Small craft flew in and out of its meager flight bay and off in the distance a small space station was taking shape.
The location was ideal, plenty far from the prying eyes of the Order Police, or so they hoped, and near enough to these “aliens” to attract attention. The ship was pouring garbage communications out like it was nobodies business; its owners knew it would be noticed, how could it not? The only thing that ever came from this region of space was the faint background noise of a pulsar some 20 light-years away, the little ship would soon light up the system like a Christmas tree, they wanted to be seen, but only time could tell.

Farpoint Station listening post

The technician pressed his headphones closer to his ear. He listened for a moment, then looked up to his commanding officer. "Sir, could you come listen to this for a moment?"

The lieutenant strode over. "What is it, ensign?"

"Sir, we're getting a signal. Its definitely artificial, but it doesn't make any sense at all," he said. [OOC: I assume that's what you mean by "garbage."] "It seems to be coming from the Ursa Delta Prime system. Normally all we get from over there is background from a pulsar a little ways away." He pulled up a star chart on the holographic display at his station. The system in question lit up and magnified. "The Astrographical Survey went through there fifty years ago, charted only dead planets. Nothing there at all, or shouldn't be."

The lieutenand scowled. "Then again, Ensign, they also found this very system on their immediate previous mission, and yet here we are today where no living thing should be according to anybody's charts. This goes in the weekly dispatch by drone. I don't think its important enough to risk transmission, and nobody's going to want to check it out with a war on anyway. But it might be important. Double record it, don't want any mistakes with something like this."

The ensign nodded as he hooked in another data recorder. This was the strangest thing to happen in a while...

Gladsheim Prime, Admiralty

<<So they're really at it?>> Grand Admiral Tybar looked at his chief spook.
<<Yes, sir,>> Captain Readings answered. <<We don't know exactly what happens, but what Omega Outpost so far shows, hints in that direction.>>
<<Oenone and Cebren are still in the general area. Send one of them into the battle theatre. I want a direct report.>>
<<Yes, Sir,>> the Captain paused for a moment, before going on. <<I just received another curious report, from Omega Station, as well as some of our small listening probes. Some sort of transmission, primitive, but quite a lot of it. We could take a look. The other powers certainly are having their eyes set elsewhere...>>
<<Well, the Oenone can take a look, but she should be careful...>>

***

The Cebren immediately swallowed away, for the nearest of these Covenant systems.
THe Oenone started hopping in direction of these garbage transmission, and would arrive soon. It was only a short distance for her.

Again, the stoic face of High Priest Jenurax appeared. "You may repulse our efforts, but know this-if you invade the holy lands, you shall pay for every foot with the livs of a dozen men. We are only doing as our Lord commands us, and we find it unnerving that men can be so blind, simply to preserve their own folly beliefs. Simply profess your faith, and *no harm shall come to you*. Citizens, I urge you to make your goverments see the truth. Or else no one shall be spared, and death will reign on both sides of this war."
With a flash of light, the Jardanian task force arrived at Edean, just out of the range of the defensive turrets.

The admiral motioned. "Begin transmission............"

--

"WE ARE THE JARDANIANS, YOU WILL BE DISTROYED. YOUR BIOLOGICAL, AND TECHNOLOGICAL DISTINCTIVENESS IS ABOUT TO END. YOUR CULTURE WILL ADAPT TO SERVICE OURS. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE."

--

"Begin bombardment."

The Jardanian drednaughts begin firing special armored missles, desinged to shrug off point-defense-lasers. Targeting Edeans defensive systems, they forced the covenant troops to either slowly be distroyed, or engage the Jardanians ourside the range of their defensive guns.

A mage in the scrying chamber looked into his crystal ball and was picking up what looked like.. comm garbage. Almost like the old human SETI project. It seemed as if someone else was also floating around in space... and a little to close to the empire for comfort.

He went to his CO and the message was passed along the chain of command until it reached the Council of Seven, who immediatly dispached a destroyer to investigate.

The captain paced around the command level’s conference room, he couldn’t shake the feeling that what he was doing was illegal. He had been assured that no legal action would be taken, but still; did this go too far? The Baeloaren’s had never run into another intelligent species.

The room’s hologram emitter suddenly came to life, on it appeared the image of his first lieutenant. “I thought you should know, sir, the Warm Greetings has just entered the system, it will be in orbit in only a few minutes.” The image faded.
Good, the captain muttered, he would hate to think what might happen if an alien arrived before the Greetings.

The Warm Greetings was an unimposing cargo ship filled to the brim with computer and sensor equipment. When Megaron Industries learned that the Baeloarens weren’t alone in the galaxy, they saw an opertunity to gain a new market; communicating with potential clients would be of critical importance if they wanted to engage in profitable trade.

A worker entered the conference room where the captain was still pacing up and down the conference room, “Your presence is requested on the command deck, great one.” He announced, as he turned back towards the command deck; he smiled, he had completed his task, he had fulfilled his purpose, he was happy.

The captain shuffled past the worker towards his first lieutenant, who was peering at the sensor panel, he was exceptionally short, even for a Baeloaren patrician. “Sir”, he boomed, “We’ve detected what would appear to be ships traveling faster than light, heading straight for us.”
“Ships?” he closely inspected of the sensor readouts, yes, multiple ships, they would arrive soon, no doubt, and all within a day of the others. “Very good lieutenant, divert all power to the long range communications array please.” He ordered and rushed into the conference room.

The lieutenant shouted to another worker to prepare the ship’s FTL comm array for use, then looked back at the door to the conference room, hoping to ask the captain what the hell was going on, first they brought one of the companies biggest ships into the middle of nowhere to build a space station that no one would ever use, and now this; he wasn't sure if he liked Megaron's affinity for clandestine affairs, but they paid the bills. One of the security workers was standing in front of the door, blocking any entry. Thwarted, the lieutenant walked over to his large arm chair, which had been waiting for him on the other side of the command deck, as he waddled over he peered at the worker in front of conference room door, he had a smug look on his face. The lieutenant pondered, was he really better off than one of the workers? They went about their duties and couldn’t be happier, they knew their place in the universe, they had a purpose, and what did he have; a small apartment on Bramus in the Gracious Meadows Archology, a mate, two offspring, some nice things, but no happiness as far as he can see. For a moment he envied the workers, they were the only ones who were truly happy, he wondered what it must feel like to be happy, was he happy once? Perhaps, but he couldn’t recall that time. As the lieutenant plopped into his chair a midshipmen’s voice came over the loudspeaker, “All hands, prepare for ship wide power losses, life-support systems are going offline.” the message repeated once more before the lights went out.

The captain sat at the head of the conference table, he moved his hand towards the hologram projector’s controls and punched in a set of numbers. He had done his part; he had only to wait while the ship’s high power FTL communications array powered up. It took a lot of power to get a streaming signal across so many light-years, the technology wasn’t new, but it certainly wasn’t meant to be used by such a small ship. This comm. array was built for a Ship of the Line, or an archology, but not for the relatively small Megaron class, it took almost every watt to hold a short conversation at this range. The lights dimmed and then went out. The hologram projector then came to life; the room was pitch black, save only for aged white face of Kain Meedron, CEO of Megaron Industries.
“What news, captain?” the voice asked, the image shimmered, the words hardly in sync with the hologram.
Good news, the Warm Greetings has arrived in the system and our sensors have detected what appears to alien ships traveling towards us.” He reported, Kain smiled, but stopped himself.
“What do you mean by “ships”?”he was sure someone would notice their little ploy, but not this many, he wasn’t sure if he liked the idea.
“Objects, sir, traveling faster than light, from different directions, at different speeds, and of different size I believe. Shall I transmit the sensor readings?” the captain explained. Kain nodded.
“Well, you’ll just have your work cut out for you then, I expect you to make contact as planned, but protect the Greetings, we’ve poured a lot of credits into that ship.” Kain moved his head partially off screen, preparing to end the conversation, but was cut short.
“Before you go,” the captain protested, “are you certain this is legal?” his voice grew timid.
“That doesn’t matter anymore, your about to make history, see to it this runs smoothly and it won’t matter.” he said, reassuringly. “Besides, our lawyers have been on top of this for months now, I have complete confidence in their ability, and yours.” the image sputtered and disappeared, the capacitors had fully discharged, the communication had ended.

Almost immediately the lights came back, followed by a sharp hissing noise as the environmental systems quickly replaced the stagnant air throughout the ship. Outside the ship’s engine’s created a soft blue glow and it slowly repositioned itself in orbit. It was only a matter of time before the guests arrived. The captain returned to his pacing, he wondered if he had worn the floor any, but had too much dignity to check, he would look at the security records later; he nodded to himself, maintaining his patrol around the conference room.

*ooc: my ships don't fly FTl per se, they hop around using shortish-ranged wormholes, so no real FTL movement here... :) **

Fast Destroyer Oenone

<<We are in for the last leg of the journey, Sir,>> Captain Althathtcha was informed by his astrogations officer.
<<Proceed.>> Instants later the paterning nodes began to manipulate local space and punched a hole in it, by which the Oenone got swallowed, only to re-appear in the fringes of the system they were tagged to investigate.
They appeared fully stealthed, their passive sensors taking in everything they could see.
<<Detecting several ships in the inner system, a sort of station. Apart from that, we don't detect major concentrations of life.>>
<<Slowly proceed towards the inner system. I want a really good look before we make any contact.>>

For the outside observer, the bridge of the Oenone looked like any other empty room. Pleasantly coloured and lighted, the crew and captain lay on their couches, eyes closed. No terminal, no manipulation device was visible. But it was the normal state of a Gladsheim craft.

<<Captain, if possible, you are allowed to make contact. If hostile, retreat,>> Admiral Njuvar told him, observing the scene at the Admiralty.

Republic Intelligence Division Military HQ, Pinnacle

"We've got the latest drone from Farpoint. A shuttle has picked it up and its on its way to our landing pad now."

"Send its contents along to the analysts as soon as it arrives, Lieutenant. The take could be valuable to the war effort."

"Aye, sir."

Pinnacle, 300 miles AGL

First Task Force, Fifth Fleet was supplied and forming up for the jump to the first target of their campaign. The suppression and distraction raids had given the enemy a taste of the Republic's wrath. Now it was time for them to get the real deal. They only waited for any relevant intelligence from Farpoint, and the analysis had been given top priority. Two battleships formed up around a single fleet carrier while smaller cruisers and destroyers formed a screen.

The Arcanian Destroyer Semmemon lurched out orf the astral plane. Shields up and weapons charged.

An illusory image of the ships captain one Alarik Eiden appeared on the bridge of the Megaron class vessell. He was an Elf, frainl with point ears, he carried a mithril staff and a rapier hung at his side.

"Greetings. I am the chosen emissary of the Arcane Empire, an interstallar empire consisting of magic users."

<<Dammit,>> the Duke of Nethington cursed as he saw the Arcane ship appear on Oenone's scanners. <<Can't they keep their noses out of anything?>> he let a digital sigh escape.
<<I'll proceed, anyway,>> Captain Althathtcha told over the 'Net. <<If they're hostile, they blow them out of the water, not us.>>

After hours of bombardment, eaden was feeling pain.

The precision missles punched holes in the fixed guns, and any ships that tried to venture out past the runs range discovered the hard way that they were out gunned and out numbered.

Naval Forces moved to a heightened state of alertness

Due to the actions of the so called Covenant of God and various other maneuvers by galactic powers, the President has issued a mandate moving the armed forces of the Empire into a heightened state of alertness. The order was not met with surprise and had been anticipated by various news organizations. It is believed by some that the Navy will also undergo a series of expansions in order to keep the Empire ahead in the rapidly changing times. The secretary of defense, was quoted as saying that “The Empire has no intentions at this time to expand its naval forces.”

Veithan-Myheri Alliance in the works?

The Myheri republic the most capable of the so called “local fiefdoms” in our area of space and the Empire have currently being involved in a flurry of activity since the appearance of the so called Covenant of God. It has been widely believed by analysts that the activity in and around the Veithan embassy in Myheri space as well as the Myheri embassy within Empire territory is a prelude to some sort of alliance between the nations. The Myheri have been fiercely independent ever since the Empire made contact with their borders. Relations between both nations have been cool but trade has slowly but surely been flourishing over the last five years, the last time the Empire made an attempt to incorporate the Myheri into the Empire proper. The Myheri military forces while significant, are not up to Empire standards either numerically or technologically. It is due to this fact that most analysts believe that any alliance between the nations will be defensive in nature, The Myheri gaining the protection of the Veithan naval forces at the cost of some concessions. It is widely known that the Empire has coveted the idea of having a naval base of operations within Myheri space, something that would drastically shorten the patrol routes of the fourth fleet.

War between Arcane Empire and Covenant of God

The Arcane Empire has as of twenty four hours ago declared war on the Covenant of God and mobilized its forces along those of other willing star nations against Covenant forces. Analysts believe that the overwhelming amount of firepower arrayed against the Covenant will almost surely lead to the latter’s defeat. The Covenant’s foolish decision to threaten all civilized star nations has cost it dearly, as an apparent coalition of nations prepares to take the conflict directly to their territory and home world. Empire forces will not take part in the operations against the Covenant, the ambassador to the Arcane Empire Ryann Meirlis was quoted as saying the following. “The Veithan Empire has outmost confidence in the military capabilities of the Arcane Empire and those that have allied with it against the Covenant. We have no desire to take part in such operations, primarily because our presence is not needed. We wish the Arcane Empire and its allies safe and successful operations against the Covenant.”

Exports increase by 250% in the field of military technology, computers and other high technology

The appearance of the Covenant of God and the sudden upheaval and militarization that occurred due to their actions and those of other nations has driven up the demand for Veithan goods. There has been a rapid increase in the demand for Veithan goods, especially in the fields of weapons technology. Projections indicate that if demands continue at their current rate, by the end of this quarter exports in various fields will rise by at least 250% over last year. The highest demand has been in self-defense products such as small arms, armored vehicles, munitions and orbital defenses. The vast majority of the demand has come from nations in relatively close proximity to the Empire. Ylana Veilis, a representative for Zenith Technologies one of the leading arms manufacturers within the Empire answered our inquiries plainly. “I believe that the appearance of the Covenant of God and other interstellar situations, have driven various nations to re-examine their present day defenses and needs. It is not surprising that in these times, a nation or corporation would wish to increase their armaments in light of changing situations. We at Zenith Technologies applaud such actions, and assure our customers present and future that their needs will be met by our designs.”

Across the Covenant, the surrender signal went out. High Priest Jenurax appeared on the state-news service. "We are outnumbered, and surrounded. We shall surrender..for the moment. Let the heathens take our worlds, but soon we shall rise up again.." All Covenant forces engaged in battle suddenly
powered down their weapons and shields, and sent out surrender signals. Planetary shields were dropped, minefields deactivated, and orbital guns powered down.

The Jardanian fleet moves in, boarding crews secure the other ships, and troop transports secure the station.
